Tumblr

In the days of yore — when Tumblr was the social media platform de rigueur and My Chemical Romance turned adolescent angst into a bona fide culture — I lined my eyes like a raccoon, slipped into a Dead Inside T-shirt and headed to my very first concert. A Rocket To The Moon was supporting Mayday Parade and suddenly I felt as though I was surrounded by my people: the emos and scene teens, baby goths and outsiders; the kids who were really not okay and had no interest in pretending otherwise. It was there that I met a young woman who told me that she was an emo fetish model. I knew very little about fetish modelling at the time (Like Bettie Page? I wondered). But after that encounter I did a deep dive on Tumblr and MySpace using an old, two-stone laptop and discovered what felt like a whole new world. I found women and femmes decked out in latex and fox tails. I saw dominatrices taking control — of their bodies, their sexualities, their power. Eventually, I discovered fat fetish modelling, too — a community that totally transformed the way I perceived my own plus-size figure.Like the woman…

If you are in the business of consuming celebrity culture, you will be familiar with the cycle of celebrity regret. A famous person does, or more commonly tweets, something inflammatory, there are about 24 hours of discourse around it from people who have something to say (everyone), and before the headline leaves the news, we have a Notes app apology posted to all platforms.Halsey is no stranger to the regret cycle. In fact, they bookended 2020 with two different apologies. In January of last year they apologized for accidentally calling for a second 9/11 after Pitchfork gave their album a middling review. Then, in December, they apologized for posting an image of them in the midst of an eating disorder, which is significantly less funny than saying the World Trade Center should collapse because you got a 6.5 on a music blog.To me though, Halsey’s most legendary regret is one that doesn’t come up as often. It’s something they did as a teenager alone in their bedroom, where all great regrets are born.Like many people who are now 26, Halsey spent a lot of time on the internet during their teenage years — specifically Tumblr, and even more specifically, One…

Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch’s venture capital-focused podcast, where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. For our Wednesday show this week, Natasha and Alex and Danny had colleague Amanda Silberling on the show to help us parse through OnlyFans‘ precedent-setting move to ban sexually explicit content on its service. The decision was a bolt from the blue for many of its creators, a great portion of whom created and monetized adult videos and images through the subscription service. It also stirred up a ton of debate around fintech, crypto, venture capital and the morality of decision-makers. We put all the facts in context for you, hitting the following points: OnlyFans’ recently leaked financials. Of course, the company’s historical, and projected revenues, are now dated thanks to the platform’s planned content changes, but all the same the numbers help put into context just how much money OnlyFans’ adult creators were earning on its platform. The leaked financials were part of a pitch deck that the company was using on its plight to raise more capital — an endeavor that has apparently been challenging for the startup. This tension made us think about the role that venture capital plays in funding vice startups, and why…

Read more OnlyFans, a subscriber-only website, is taking a page out of the Tumblr handbook, announcing that it will be blocking sexually explicit material starting October 1st. For those who don’t remember, back in 2018, Tumblr decided that they were going to start blocking adult content. It was a move presumably geared at “protecting vulnerable communities” on the site that ended up leaving NSFW content creators with nowhere to post their work and the loss of years of work. By March of 2019, Tumblr had lost about a third of its user base. According to PinkNews, Tumblr suffered a 150 million drop in page view traffic after their adult content ban. And if you check Google Trends’ analytics over the past five years to gauge interest in Tumblr, you also see a sharp decline in 2019 that has continuously fallen to this day. That’s what OnlyFans is risking as it begins its journey into blocking sexually explicit material. Just to clarify, OnlyFans’ ban on sexually explicit material doesn’t mean that the site will be saying goodbye to its nude photos or videos. Those can still be posted.…

Taylor Swift earned a swift following on TikTok after making an account and posting her first video Monday. A short clip shared by the “Shake It Off” singer shows Swift recreating her looks from some of her albums. “Lots going on at the moment: Red (my version) vinyl is up for presale on my site and oh I’m on tiktok now let the games begin,” Swift captioned the post. In this file photo, Taylor Swift attends the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 5, 2020 in Beverly Hills, Calif. (Frazer Harrison/Getty Images) She also included the hashtag #SwiftTok in the caption. Swift’s account garnered more than 600,000 followers within its first few hours on the video-sharing TikTok app, while the pop star’s debut post earned more 2 million views and more than 550,000 likes during that stretch. The singer is in the process of re-recording her first six albums after the rights to much of her musical catalog were obtained in 2019 by Scooter Braun, whom Swift accused of “incessant, manipulative bullying” in a Tumblr post at the time. Swift, 31, released the first such album — “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” — in April, and…
