Harper’s BAZAAR’s September theme is Icons, and with our cover star, Beyoncé, we have not disappointed. But even as the concept of an icon is timeless, the meaning of the adjective iconic has shifted over time. In the breathless parlance of a certain section of the internet, iconic can mean anything and everything. It can describe the fleeting perfection of a Whitney Houston run and the niche obsession with a regional soda brand. What does this changing usage mean, and where does it come from? Yes, you read that right. Maroon 5’s lead daddy Adam Levine has released a song called ‘Good Mood’, which is basically the Paw Patrol version of Despical Me‘s ‘Happy’ by Pharrel Williams. Except, not nearly as iconic. The song itself is fine. I mean, it’s what you’d expect for the credit song of a children’s movie. It’s fun, it’s poppy, it’ll probably end up in one of the Spotify summer playlists I have playing mindlessly in the background. I couldn’t really tell you much about it. Remember the Tumblr witch who stole human bones from the “poor man’s graveyard” in New Orleans? That was six years ago. Feel old yet? Now it looks like the discussion around whether it is ever legal—or moral—to own and sell human remains has found a new home: TikTok. In the eye of the hurricane is Jon Ferry, founder and CEO of JonsBones, self-described “the leading provider of medical human osteology.” The New York-based website sells authentic human bones “for the purpose of education and understanding”: the cheapest items, bones and ribs, are under $20, with entire human skeletons sold for as little as $6,350. Ferry has amassed 460,000 followers on the app since first opening his profile, @jonsbones, in February 2020. Aside from taking tons of adorable videos of his cat, Ferry posts incessantly about his extensive human bone collection. In addition to the supply of skulls, he has a literal wall decorated with human spines, which he calls “his pride and joy.” Ferry’s company prides itself on providing “responsibly sourced human osteology” and the TikToker himself has said where all these bones come from—and noted that he regularly gets asked whether he’s a grave robber.  Up until the 1960s,…

Shutterstock Scooter Braun, owner of Scooter Braun Projects, is a music tycoon who manages some of the world's most iconic artists. Although the millionaire is known for representing big-name clients, including Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, David Guetta, and Dan + Shay, in recent years, he has also made headlines for his connection to Taylor Swift. When Braun bought Swift's former record label, Big Machine Label Group, including the master recordings of her first six albums, the "You Belong to Me" singer took to Tumblr to pen an explosive post about how "sad and grossed out" she was over the deal, according to Rolling Stone.  The problem stems from how Swift perceived Braun as a "manipulative bully" and felt betrayed by her prior record label for selling her master recordings to Braun, especially after she begged to be granted the rights to her own music, as reported by Vox. "Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter," Swift wrote. She went on to claim that Big Machine founder Scott Borchetta knew that she didn't trust Braun and that both he and Braun were attempting to " a woman who didn't want to be associated with them."
