An early adopter of technology, Desrosiers utilizes her interests and strengths in her new role at the Amazon-owned company. She leads the creator partnerships teams and will develop programs to highlight new voices and oversee initiatives based on social impact and strengthen Twitch’s reach within colleges and universities. “Twitch is a pioneer in the creator economy, and I’m thrilled to be joining a platform so pivotal in giving creators a voice,” said Desrosiers, according to the outlet. “I’m excited to partner with Twitch’s creator community to understand their challenges, celebrate their successes, create new opportunities, and champion diverse voices on the platform as Twitch enters its next chapter,” she said. I hear you like to watch There seems to be no stopping the steamroller success of the internet’s premier live-streaming service, Twitch — indeed, across 2021, the site has seen a huge 45% year-on-year increase in viewership figures when compared to the previous year. Altogether this equates to some 24 billion hours spent watching other people gaming, painting, bathing, and… sleeping. There will be no odds offered against wild guesses, as the three games in question are — unsurprisingly — Rockstar’s moneymaker Grand Theft Auto V (2.1 billion hours), Riot Games’ uber-popular MOBA League of Legends (1.8 billion hours), and, of course, Epic Games’ battle royale juggernaut Fortnite (a modest one billion hours). As television ratings continue to decline, livestreaming saw its best year ever in 2021. Between Twitch and Facebook Gaming, viewers watched a combined 29.3 billion hours in 2021 — a 45% increase over 2020, according to a year-end report from Rainmaker and StreamElements. Twitch — the largest livestreaming and gaming platform — reported that its viewers watch 24 billion hours this year versus 17 billion in 2020. Facebook Gaming, meanwhile, went from 3.6 billion hours last year to 5.3 billion this year. YouTube Gaming’s year-end numbers haven’t been released, but its midyear figures included 800 billion gaming views and 90 million livestreamed hours. While video games “Grand Theft Auto V,” “League of Legends,” and “Fortnite” all broke the 1-billion-hour mark on Twitch, the “Just Chatting” category — Twitch’s version of a chat room or a podcast — was No. 1 at 3.1 billion hours. The top streamers on Twitch in 2021 range from Canadian gamer “xQc” to American political commentator “HasanAbi” to German gamer “MontanaBlack88.”
