On July 27, Félix “xQc” Lengyel watched a YouTube clip of a badminton match from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics before a Twitch audience of over 50,000 viewers. For most of the video’s more than 10-minute duration, Lengyel’s mouth was agape in astonishment. “Ahhhh!” he yelled as one badminton player dove for a lightspeed save. “He’s doing splits!” What Lengyel’s improvised commentary lacked in expertise, it made up for with enthusiasm. The next day, the International Olympic Committee got him suspended from Twitch.With over 9 million followers and concurrent viewer counts that regularly break 100,000, the often controversial Lengyel is by many measures the livestreaming platform’s biggest star. (Twitch is owned by Amazon, whose founder, Jeff Bezos, also owns The Washington Post.) Impact Wrestling is getting back into the subscription service to view their weekly show for those that don’t get their channel on their networks, and it hit a slight snag. This week’s IMPACT! and Before the Impact (BTI) were officially moved from their Twitch channel to their Youtube channel where fans can watch for $.99 or $4.99 a month and an Impact Wrestling Insider. The latter gets more behind the scenes videos and deals. It’s a pretty cool concept and keeps the cost low for fans and offers other benefits. A new indie-focused showcase, plus a Steam Festival to follow A new multi-publisher showcase is on the way to highlight games coming out of the independent development scene. The Indie Houses is a collection of publishers spanning continents and backgrounds, and they’re hosting both a Direct-style showcase and a weeklong festival at the end of August. The Indie Houses is currently made up of Akupara Games, Fellow Traveller, Neon Doctrine, Raw Fury, Those Awesome Guys, Toge Productions, and Whitethorn Games. The initiative will be kicking off its public-facing presence with a publisher showcase, The Indie Houses Direct, on Aug. 31. Airing over on Twitch, YouTube, and Steam, the Indie Houses Direct will be an hour-long segment packed with news and reveals from the seven publishers taking part in the Direct. Following this, there will be a weeklong Steam Festival held from Aug. 31 through Sept. 7. The Steam Festival will feature multiple game demos, live broadcasts, game bundles, and sales. Ahead of the Street Fighter V Summer Update 2021, Twitch has added two new global emotes themed around iconic characters from the fighting game franchise.  RyuChamp and FamilyMan will be available to users across the streaming platform until further notice, representing Ryu and Guile, respectively. Capcom is partnering with Twitch for the Summer Update 2021 showcase, exclusively broadcasting on the Twitch Gaming channel rather than the usual dual stream on the Capcom Fighters Twitch and YouTube channels. It will also be an extended, hour-long stream with multiple updates and new behind-the-scenes looks, compared to the previous 2021 updates for the game, which both lasted just 30 minutes.  This showcase will likely see an Oro deep dive, including a look at all of his abilities, moves, and how the hermit implements things such as V-Gauge and V-Trigger. Giants middle linebacker Blake Martinez was a breakthrough COVID-19 case. He caught the virus despite being fully vaccinated, which sidelined him from training camp ... until his first practice on Tuesday. “Yeah, I’m fully vaccinated,” Martinez said. “ just like, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ … Every person I hung around was fully vaccinated, things like that, and it just happened.” Martinez, 27, experienced symptoms and said “it was definitely scary,” especially because he has a young daughter.
