Creatives across ASU have been doing their best to create content while also balancing school and work For the past year, students across ASU have been balancing school, part-time jobs, internships and creative work, all while making their way through the COVID-19 pandemic. Stuck inside, many have taken the time spent in isolation to create music, live stream on Twitch and create other forms of online content. Zach Caragan Bour is a junior majoring in accounting, minoring in business and pursuing a certificate in entrepreneurship, all of which he hopes will help him break into the music industry as Caragan. “I started (making music) when I was in high school, and I found a club that helped me learn how to produce music,” Bour said. “As I’ve continued college and released more music, I found that I can tie this professional aspect that comes with accounting into a more, like, developed path to pursuing what I want." Bour said when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, the "time was tough and productive all at once." “Promoting myself was kind of difficult because everyone was going through such a hard time mentally, but what I really found instead of self-promotion was self-growth,"…

by Dustin Steiner in General | Apr, 9th 2021 Twitch has updated its hateful conduct and harassment policy to ‘better protect every community on Twitch.’ They’ve done so to be more transparent about user behavior that isn’t acceptable by users on Twitch. Still, now they’re updating that policy to target hate groups, sexual abusers, and other types of abuse that happen off of Twitch as well.  “Our current guidelines state that in some serious cases where there is available, verifiable evidence, we may take action against users for hateful conduct or harassment that occurs off Twitch services—meaning on social media, other online services, or even offline—when directed at members of the Twitch community,” Twitch said in a blog post. “Taking action against misconduct that occurs entirely off our service is a novel approach for both Twitch and the industry at large, but it’s one we believe—and hear from you—is crucial to get right. Part of that means being clear with you about the limitations of our policy. At this time, we’re not able to investigate behaviors that occur entirely off Twitch that fall outside these categories. This is an iterative, ongoing process, and as always, our end goal is to…

SEVILLE, SPAIN - APRIL 03: Inaki Williams of Athletic Bilbao and Igor Zubeldia of Real Sociedad ... compete for a header during the Copa Del Rey Final match between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club at Estadio de La Cartuja on April 03, 2021 in Seville, Spain. Sporting stadiums around Spain remain under strict restrictions due to the Coronavirus Pandemic as Government social distancing laws prohibit fans inside venues resulting in games being played behind closed doors. (Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty Images) Getty Images A fixture that screamed of old tussles and classical vibes took a modern twist on Wednesday, as the Basque derby between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club aired live on Twitch, becoming the first Spanish top-flight soccer game to be broadcast on the platform. Soccer consumption is now diverse, but La Liga and television rights holder Mediapro’s decision to show the 1-1 draw for free on what is typically a streaming service for gamers was a bold move. Instead of watching pundits on the box, viewers in Spain could flock online to see social media influencer Ibai Llanos walk them through proceedings on his channel alongside presenter Ander Cortes. Twitch’s chat box feature meant users could interact…

FOR Fauzan Hassan, Twitch is a place where he can be himself. On his channel, “achievethezen”, he can do what he loves while talking live about what he likes, and converse with like-minded folk about things he is passionate about. Many, from celebrities, content creators, gamers to the average youth, have turned to the streaming platform to virtually hang out with others while entertaining them at the same time. Twitch has become a popular platform for people to livestream their activities, before editing and posting as well as repackaging it as videos or podcasts on other platforms. The reasons for the platform’s popularity varies – from instant feedback, to a more informal and relaxed setting to, of course, money-making opportunities. While most content creators on democratised content platforms make money on advertisements, donations and sponsorships, a Twitch streamer can make money directly from viewers. The initial investment is relatively low and is fairly basic. For a start, one needs a reliable internet connection, a good desktop PC, a competent webcam, a decent microphone and some simple lighting. Fauzan tried out live streaming in 2017 on a laptop with Facebook Live. However, he found the experience lacking, his device was underpowered…

The Canadian PressIn Canada, U.S., vaccine 'passports' could be new point of cross-border contentionWASHINGTON — As if the COVID-19 pandemic hadn't produced enough ways to complicate life at the border between Canada and the United States, here comes another: whether or not to require proof of vaccination. Debate is heating up in the freedom-focused U.S. about whether retailers, businesses and employers can and should require customers, workers and visitors to prove they've had a vaccine. The discussion is also happening in Canada, a country some observers say is more attuned to the collective good than many of those in the land of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Where the two meet up, potential snafus abound. "Some of these discussions could be very challenging," said Jack Jedwab, president of the Association for Canadian Studies and the Canadian Institute for Identities and Migration. "I don't think that Canadians are going to look kindly on the idea that, you know, you could have significant numbers of people crossing the border that are unvaccinated." That could be part of the reason for the apparent difference of opinion that emerged Tuesday between Ottawa and the White House on the issue of requiring vaccine…

Just when I thought Final Fantasy XIV‘s director and producer Naoki Yoshida couldn’t get any cooler, he goes and pours himself a glass of wine and starts hosting a cooking show on Twitch. Yes, Yoshi-P went full suburban mom this week, and he is clearly living his best life. If you want in on this incredible lifestyle, he’s even shared his coffee cookie recipe with the world. These are based on FFXIV’s coffee biscuits, but the stream title has a cookie pun (and maybe a reference to the oft-forgotten NES puzzler Yoshi’s Cookie?) so I’m going with the Americanism here. The stream itself is fully in Japanese, but the FFXIV Discord has gone and translated the whole thing, so you can make your own version of Yoshida’s cookies. While I understand about as much Japanese as any casual anime viewer, the stream is still delightful, especially with its occasional breaks into an in-game kitchen to really sell the whole cooking show vibe. Check out the recipe for yourself below, courtesy of both Yoshi-P and Miuna on the FFXIV Discord. (I did the NA measurement conversions, so yes, there was some work for me involved.) FFXIV coffee cookie recipe ingredients: 300g…
