TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat each occupy a different functional role in teenagers’ daily lives, according to a new Pew Research Center study that surveyed 1,458 U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 and their parents between September 25 and October 9, 2025. Rather than functioning as interchangeable social media destinations, each platform attracts teens for meaningfully different reasons. TikTok Serves as an Entertainment and Discovery Engine Teen TikTok users go to the platform primarily to be entertained and informed. Roughly 96% cite entertainment as a reason they use the app, with 82% calling it a major reason, the highest share of any platform in the study. Beyond passive consumption, TikTok also leads the three platforms on product discovery: approximately 58% of teen TikTok users say they go there for product reviews or recommendations, compared with 48% on Instagram and 32% on Snapchat. News consumption follows a similar pattern. About 45% of teen TikTok users cite news as a reason they visit the platform, versus roughly 39% on Instagram and 26% on Snapchat. Snap Incorporation, the tech firm behind social network Snapchat cut 1,000 jobs on Wednesday, April 15. The reason given for the job cuts is that AI is boosting efficiency as the company strives to be profitable. The shake-up at Snap involves about 16 percent of its full-time employees and elimination of more than 300 unfilled roles, Chief Executive Evans Spiegel said in a memo shared by the company. “We have already witnessed small squads leveraging AI tech to drive meaningful progress across several important initiatives. The Southern California-based tech firms joins a growing list of companies reducing staff while extolling productivity gains resulting from the use of AI. “This is an incredibly difficult decision, and I am deeply sorry to the colleagues who will be leaving us”, Spiegel wrote. Snap experts to cut more than $500 million from its annual costs by the second half of this year, establishing “a clearer path to net-income profitability”, the memo said. Snap has gone through several rounds of job cuts during the past four years as it competes with rivals such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. Activist fund Irenic Capital Management disclosed a 2.5 percent stake in Snap recently and called for belt-tightening

US company Snap, operator of the messenger Snapchat, is cutting around 1000 jobs worldwide as well as at least 300 open positions. This is according to a filing with the US stock exchange regulator SEC and an internal letter from CEO Evan Spiegel to the staff. The US corporation expects productivity gains and long-term profitability from the use of artificial intelligence. By cutting 16 percent of its jobs, the company aims to save around 500 million US dollars per year. This is offset by one-time charges of 95 to 130 million US dollars for severance pay and transition payments. However, this step is not new: The company had already laid off about 500 employees in 2024. The most massive cut to date was a wave of layoffs from 2022, which affected even 20 percent of the staff at the time. More hoped-for productivity through AI In the internal letter, Snap CEO Spiegel primarily justifies the measure by rapid technological change. Advances in the field of AI allow many repetitive processes to be largely automated and development tasks to be completed much faster. The job cuts are to impact all areas of activity, such as development, design, marketing, and administration. Publicly
