'No Other Repercussions': Small Town Community Outraged After Five Teens Seen Wearing 'White …

Members of a small Pennsylvania town are making noise after five teens in their community were photographed mockingly posing wearing White Lives Matter T-shirts and were reportedly only sent home from school early on the last day of the year. The image, which began circulating on Snapchat and Reddit, shows the group of teenage males who attended Montgomery Area High School wearing the shirts, in response to the Black Lives Matter movement and smiling, while one in the group poses with his two middle fingers raised. The students allegedly wore the shirts to school that day. “One of the most disrespectful things I’ve ever seen happen in Montgomery,” read a student’s Snapchat caption that was captured on Reddit. “Only reason you did this was to piss people off and look like a complete racist, not funny at all.” An anonymous source sent the image to VICE News, which reached out to the students in the image, the school’s vice-principal, the district’s superintendent, as well as various members of the Montgomery County System School Board for comment, but were met with no responses. According to a source, the students were given a slap on the wrist for the offensive photo. “They…

Other Voices: Why a cheerleader's Snapchat curses are worthy of Supreme Court protection

When Pennsylvania student Brandi Levy failed to make her high school’s varsity cheerleading team in 2017, she reacted with typical teenage melodrama. She cursed school, she cursed cheer, and she raised her middle finger for good measure. She did this on a Saturday at a convenience store, and she posted the rant to Snapchat, where her friends would see it for a fleeting moment before the post disappeared. Except her post didn’t go away. The middle finger, the words and even the emoji made it all the way to the Supreme Court, immortalized in a ruling that wisely sided with the cheerleader in a case with ramifications for public schools across America. The high court said last week that Levy’s school violated her First Amendment rights by booting her from the junior varsity cheerleading team over the Snapchat post. There is nothing to admire about Levy’s profane diatribe. Her speech is far from the dignified political expression of students in 1965 who wore black armbands to school in protest of the Vietnam War and were suspended — punishment that the Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional in the landmark Tinker vs. Des Moines case. Still, Levy did not name the school or…

Shaw rape complainant “told friend on Snapchat”

The rape is said to have taken place near Crompton War Memorial A woman who claims she was raped near the Crompton War Memorial by a man she had met that day told her friend about it on Snapchat afterwards, a court has heard. Ryan Horsfall is on trial at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court accused of the rape and two other sexual acts on a girl who was 15 at the time in April 2018. The jury has already heard from the girl in question, now 18, when her police interview was played and she was later cross examined in court. She said she had met Horsfall earlier that day, they had been heading home through the war memorial when he stood on her foot, swung her round and began kissing her.
