A division bench of the Delhi High Court which on Thursday had dismissed the appeals of WhatsApp and Facebook challenging a Competition Commission of India (CCI) order calling for an investigation into the messaging apps’ new privacy policy said that the 2021 policy, however, places its users in a “take-it-or-leave-it” situation, virtually forcing its users into agreement by providing a mirage of choice, and then sharing their sensitive data with Facebook companies envisaged in the policy. The bench of Justice Satish Chander Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad in its detail judgement said that “the Court finds merit in the submission of the ASGs appeared for CCI that one of the key issues with the 2021 Policy is its propensity to share the data of its users with Facebook Inc., the parent company of WhatsApp. Solely for the reason that the policies itself do not emanate out of Facebook Inc., the Appellant cannot hide behind the fact that it is the direct and immediate beneficiary of the data sharing mechanism envisaged by the policies. In April, social messaging app WhatsApp announced it was working on a new 'Communities' feature, a way for separate groups to come "under one umbrella," in what sounded like a hopeful competitor to Slack. Now, the feature is available for beta users. The Meta-owned messaging platform has been slowly rolling out incremental updates over the last few months: groups sizes doubled to 512 people, 32-person video calls, an increased 2GB file-sharing limit, emoji reactions, "last seen" statuses that let you hide it from certain people, and now, Communities. According to WhatsApp, Communities is now available in "limited countries." If you have the feature available to you already, you can add up to 10 groups under one community. Communities also gives group admins more power; they can remove messages they deem "errant or problematic" and can send announcement messages to everyone in the group. Members can also break off into smaller discussion groups within that Community. Some iOS beta testers are getting a reaction preview within the chat list on WhatsApp. According to feature tracker WABetaInfo, the new update was submitted through the TestFlight beta Program, bringing the version up to 22.18.0.71. The tracker also mentions that some users may also be able to get the same feature following the 22.18.0.70 beta update. The new update will also allow admins in group chats to delete messages for all. For the time being, the new features are being tested for iOS’s WhatsApp Beta users in version 22.18.0.70. However, the feature will soon be rolled out to Android users as well. The ability to retrieve deleted messages, according to the report, will only be for the messages that you delete for yourself (delete for me), not the messages that you “delete for everyone." A snack bar will show up informing users that the message has been erased and they can undo it. It is not known how long users will have to retrieve a deleted message. The Meta-owned instant messaging app is also said to be bringing the ability for group admins to delete any message for everyone in a group.
