Nights of sirens: Life under fire in Jerusalem

By AUDREY LYNN LEINOFF MARCH 23, 2026 16:49 Updated: MARCH 23, 2026 18:04 It was cold, it was dark, and I was sitting alone in the middle of a stairwell on a lower floor in my apartment building in Jerusalem, for I could not remember how many times that day already. What day was it anyway, I wondered? Saturday, Sunday? Or maybe just that witching hour found in the middle of all nights that is always accompanied by an unbridled sense of dread. And how many days have passed since Operation Roaring Lion began? Was it three, four, or five? In my dazed state after waking to the unearthly screeching sound of yet another Home Front Command missile alert on my phone, it was hard to tell. But I had bigger problems at the moment, I reminded myself in the deadly silence that followed; survival would be a good one to fixate on, for instance. Unlike most of my friends, some of them in southern Israel, most in the Gush Dan region, my housing complex has no bomb shelter. That is why I keep dragging my carcass down two flights of stairs, where I mercilessly plump my protesting backside down

Bedfordshire magistrate warned over “racially inappropriate” comment on WhatsApp during …

A Bedfordshire magistrate has been given a misconduct warning following a comment in a private WhatsApp group. Derek Muhammad – JP of the Bedfordshire bench – was having a “private intellectual discussion about the complex legacy of Winston Churchill and the colonial history of Britain”. But another member of the WhatsApp group took umbrage, saying it was racially prejudiced and reported experiencing distress as a result of the comment. The experienced magistrate of nearly 20 years denied this was the case, saying it wasn’t racist and had been taken out of context. Winston Churchill (Image by Simon Goodall/Pixabay) During the hearing, Mr Muhammad said his comment had been taken out of its context and had been a criticism of colonial exploitation. He cited his own heritage and argued it isn’t credible to suggest he harbours racial animus toward people with whom he shares ancestry. He cited his long, unblemished record of public service – and suggested the complaint was vexatious and insincere. But following an investigation under the Judicial Conduct (Magistrates) Rules 2023, a nominated committee member of the South-East Region Conduct Advisory Committee found "Mr Muhammad’s comment was racially inappropriate as it could be interpreted as expressing a negative

WhatsApp without numbers: Use Guest Chats to talk to anyone anonymously – LatiNation

The world’s largest messaging platform breaks its golden rule; it is now possible to chat without registering a phone number or installing the application. Through personalized links, users can invite external people who access via a web browser while maintaining end-to-end encryption. While ideal for customer service or one-off tasks, these “Guest Chats” have clear limits: they only allow text and expire after ten days of inactivity. WhatsApp has just taken a historic step that changes the rules of the instant messaging game. The Meta-owned application has begun rolling out Guest Chats, a feature designed for those who need to communicate quickly without compromising their digital identity or going through the registration process. This innovation allows anyone to participate in a conversation directly from their browser, eliminating the obligation to download the app or link a personal phone number. For those who value immediacy and control over who has access to their private contact, this tool emerges as the definitive solution for interacting with sellers, technical services or temporary acquaintances without leaving a permanent trace. WhatsApp eyes username-based communication system: Report – 24NewsHD

WhatsApp is preparing one of its most significant updates in recent years, with plans to introduce a username-based communication system that would allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday.  According to a media report, the feature would let users initiate text chats as well as audio and video calls through unique usernames instead of mobile numbers, marking a major shift in how the world’s most widely used messaging app is accessed and used. If rolled out as expected, the change would strengthen user privacy by reducing the need to disclose personal phone numbers when contacting others — a long-standing limitation on WhatsApp compared with rival messaging platforms such as Telegram and Signal, which already offer similar identity-based communication tools.  Meta’s Instagram and Facebook platforms already support usernames. According to the report, WhatsApp is targeting a global launch by mid-2026, with June set internally as a tentative milestone. The publication described the feature as potentially the company’s biggest update of the year, one that could fundamentally alter the way users interact on the platform. Earlier reports had indicated that the username system would likely be introduced as an optional privacy feature rather than a

Dutch government tests European messaging app to reduce reliance on WhatsApp

Friday, 20 March 2026 - 17:50 Share this article: State Secretary Willemijn Aerdts, responsible for Digital Economy and Sovereignty for D66, warns that reliance on foreign messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal poses a risk to the government. Her ministry has launched a pilot project with a European alternative as a first step, with the long-term goal of adopting a messaging platform fully controlled by the Dutch government. Throughout the pilot phase, the state secretary and a select group of officials will use the alternative messaging platform to communicate. Her spokesperson declined to disclose which European app is involved, noting that the project is still in its infancy. "At present, much of our communication relies on platforms beyond our control. In a world where technology is more and more used as an instrument of power, that poses a risk," the minister said. Reports this week revealed that Belgian civil servants will be banned from using WhatsApp and Messenger as of next week. De Standaard reports they are expected to transition to the government-developed app Beam, which was already adopted last week by the country’s military and intelligence agencies. While the spokesperson remains tight-lipped, ICT sector sources have suggested in the
