The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), which provides administrative, technical, and operational support for House members, officers and staff, reportedly told workers they are not allowed to download or keep WhatsApp on any House device. The ban applies to mobile, desktop and web browser versions of the app, Axios quoted the CAO as saying.“If you have a WhatsApp application on your House-managed device, you will be contacted to remove it,” the CAO added, according to Axios. The office reportedly deemed WhatsApp a “high-risk” to its users because of a lack of transparency in how the app protects user data, as well as the absence of stored data encryption and potential security issues. Meta Platforms’ messaging service WhatsApp has been prohibited on all US House of Representatives devices, according to a memo issued to House staff, reported Reuters . The directive, sent by the chief administrative officer, cited significant security risks associated with the application. The memo stated that the “Office of Cybersecurity has deemed WhatsApp a high risk to users due to the lack of transparency in how it protects user data, absence of stored data encryption, and potential security risks involved with its use.” Staff were advised to use alternative messaging platforms, including Microsoft’s Teams, Amazon.com’s Wickr, Signal, and Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime. A Meta spokesperson expressed strong disagreement with the decision, asserting that WhatsApp offers a higher level of security compared to the other approved applications. Back when Meta (then known simply as Facebook) bought it in 2014 for US$19 billion, WhatsApp had an unusual and simple business model.
