City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov is being sued by a constituent who alleges she broke the law by blocking her on Twitter — a case with striking similarities to a successful lawsuit brought against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a few years ago.Vernikov, a Republican from southern Brooklyn, is accused in the suit filed Monday of blocking Anzhela Pinkhasov from viewing or replying to any tweets posted or reposted by the Council member on her official Twitter profile.Pinkhasov, who describes herself as a “vocal” Vernikov critic and constituent of her Brighton Beach-based 48th Council District, charges in Brooklyn Federal Court papers that the GOP politician in blocking her is violating the First Amendment “because it imposes a viewpoint-based restriction” on her “participation in a public forum.” She’s asking a judge to rule Vernikov’s action unconstitutional and order that she be unblocked.Inna Vernikov Vernikov did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday.Noting that Vernikov is a licensed attorney, Pinkashov’s suit states that the lawmaker “apparently did not do her legal research when deciding to take her unlawful actions.”“The practice of an elected official blocking constituents has already been litigated with regard to President Donald J. Trump and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who blocked individuals

Photo: Koshiro K (Shutterstock)Elon Musk’s Twitter is circling the drain, though at least its Circle feature finally seems to be working properly. That’s important, because recently the feature was failing at keeping its supposedly private tweets private. In emails sent to users, the company finally admitted its system for allowing users to share tweets to a select group of followers had been borked, calling it a “security incident.”Twitter Verification is a Hot MessLast month, Circles users reported that their private tweets were somehow accessible by outsiders, even some non-followers. Users outside those circles were able to see and even like those tweets. The situation proved to be a problem, especially for users who shared some very sensitive or private information through their Circles. This led to some users being able to access some nude images not meant for people outside their group. In an email shared with Circles users, Twitter finally admitted that there were issues with Circles. The company said “this issue was identified by our security team and immediately fixed so that these tweets were no longer visible outside of your

With advertising way, way down, Musk’s plan has always been to drive up subscriptions, mainly with the draw of a verified “blue check” that is for say for $8-11 a month, which he took away from everyone who had it for free, verified under the old system. That’s except for celebrities and public figures with over a million followers, where he’s just giving it to them to ensure there remains some appearance of validity to the system. Now, a user has suggested that Musk should open up Twitter Blue to allow for gifted subscriptions, to which he replied “Ok.” A short statement, perhaps, but one that does seem somewhat inevitable. If you can’t get people to sign up on their

The suit—which invoked the controversial 2018 Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA)—represented an important test case for how expansively FOSTA would be interpreted. The case was brought by two John Does and the group formerly known as Morality in Media, a conservative activist group that now goes by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE). At the crux of the case are sexually oriented videos that the Does took of themselves when they were young teens. The teens shared these videos, via Snapchat, with an adult posing as a teenager. This person did not keep them private and they wound up circulating online. Years later, someone tweeted links to a compilation of these videos that was hosted on another website. Twitter eventually removed the tweets linking to the video (though it took a little more than a week after one Doe first reported them and a nudge from someone at the Department of Homeland Security, according to the NCOSE complaint). I wrote about this case in detail back in 2021, noting
