Twitter Made a Small Change and It's a Very Bad Sign That It's Becoming More Like Facebook

I think it's fair to say that Twitter has its problems. Right now, however, I imagine the company is grateful Facebook continues to garner most of the criticism. That doesn't mean people have forgotten the way Twitter has been used to amplify offensive content, but it hasn't been the focus of regulators and lawmakers the way Facebook has. Some of that has to do with the fact that Twitter is far smaller than Facebook and the rest of its tech peers. For comparison, Facebook has almost 3 billion regular users and is worth $900 billion. It generated over $29 billion in revenue in the past quarter, $9 billion of which was profit. Twitter, on the other hand, has around 200 million users and is worth around $40 billion. It earned a little more than $1.2 billion and generated $23 million in profit, if you don't count the $800 million it paid to settle a shareholder lawsuit. On scale alone, it makes sense that Twitter has attracted far less scrutiny. For the most part, it has avoided many of the privacy and content moderation problems that led Facebook to last week change its name to Meta. Now, however, Twitter is following in Facebook's footsteps in a…

Hat-trick! A trophy for the team and one for Pakistani Twitter, please – The Express Tribune

With each consecutive win, Pakistani fans raise the standards of their meme game After defeating India and New Zealand, the Pakistani Cricket team went ahead and scored their third consecutive win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 against Afghanistan. Even though the match was incredibly unpredictable with the opponent team’s seamless fielding and bowling attacks, Pakistanis have all the reasons to gloat about last night’s win. Pakistan chased down a 148-run target in 19 overs to record their third T20 win, but the chase wasn't easy at all. The required run rate was more than ten after the 18th over and the win was highly unlikely with wickets going down in each over. However, Asif Ali, with his confidence and immense talent, became the hero for Pakistan once again. The finisher smashed four hard sixes and chased 25 runs in the penultimate over bowled by Afghanistan’s Karim Janat. Nevertheless, Afghanistan put up a great fight and made this one of the toughest out of the three matches played. Last night’s game had everyone on their toes and Pakistani twitter documented the emotional rollercoaster brilliantly with their top-notch meme game. Afghanistan losing wickets in the first inning Rashid Khan’s stellar…

Is Twitter Stock a Buy? | The Motley Fool

The social-media company's stock dropped after a messy Q3 report. Key Points Twitter’s mixed Q3 report disappointed investors. Its advertising business remains healthy, but expenses are rising. Twitter could struggle to hit its ambitious 2023 targets. Twitter's (NYSE:TWTR) stock tumbled 11% on Oct. 27 after the social-media company posted a mixed third-quarter earnings report. Revenue rose 37% year over year to $1.28 billion, which matched Wall Street's estimates. But it also posted a net loss of $537 million, or $0.67 per share, which missed expectations by $0.85 and dropped sharply from its net income of $29 million, or $0.04 per share, a year earlier. That loss was caused by a one-time litigation charge of $766 million to settle a class-action lawsuit, which was initially filed in 2016 by investors who accused the company of using misleading engagement metrics. Image source: Getty Images. For the fourth quarter, Twitter expects its revenue to rise 16%-24%, which matches expectations for 22% growth. However, that forecast still includes its revenues from MoPub, the mobile advertising network it plans to sell to AppLovin in the first quarter of 2022. It expects its operating income to turn positive again in the fourth quarter but still decline…

MLB Twitter reacts to Bob Melvin joining Padres in shocking move | RSN – NBC Sports

Athletics Athletics The Athletics' offseason is off to a bad start before it could even begin.  Shocking news broke Thursday when longtime A's manager Bob Melvin left Oakland to take over as the manager of the San Diego Padres, sources confirmed to NBC Sports California's Brodie Brazil. Melvin agreed to a three-year contract with the Padres, MLB.com AJ Cassavell reported, citing sources. Manager of the A's for 11 seasons, Melvin's departure surprised everybody.  Just four months ago, the A's exercised Melvin's club option for the 2022 MLB season. Not to further rub salt into the wounds of A's fans, but that aged VERY poorly.  Infielder Tony Kemp was the first current A's player to react to the news that Melvin was leaving Oakland. So basically this is not a trade and thus no compensation is going to the A’s with Bob Melvin joining the Padres. Needless to say, this is a wonderful move for a Padres team in desperate need of the right voice.— Alden González (@Alden_Gonzalez) October 29, 2021 Can't imagine the Padres doing any better than this in their search, and that roster is still loaded. NL West isn't getting any easier next year https://t.co/mM9crmwYq4— Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS) October 29, 2021 Man, I'm heartbroken on two fronts and happy…

Twitter now lets hosts record and share audio Spaces | Engadget

Back in September, Twitter announced that it was planning to add recording and playback features for Spaces so that listeners can access shows after they air. Now, the website has rolled out the ability to a limited number of Spaces hosts on iOS and to all listeners on iOS and Android. Twitter says it's a way for hosts to extend the value of their work and to reach audiences who couldn't always keep an eye out for live conversations.  Hosts who already have access to Spaces Recording will have to toggle on "Record Space" before launching a new conversation to switch on the feature. A recording icon will be visible to everyone, including listeners, during the show. Hosts will have access to the recording for 30 days after initial broadcast, and they'll be able to share and tweet it for their followers to see. Listeners will be able to play back recordings right on their timeline — they'll also be able to share them, which could translate to more listeners and fans for hosts.  While the recording will be available for a month, hosts can delete it anytime. Twitter says it will still keep a file for up to 120…

Twitter Looks to Boost Spaces Discovery with New Alerts on Trending Chats | Social Media Today

Twitter’s looking to get more people tuning into Spaces chats by highlighting the best conversations as they happen within the Explore tab, which could result in a big boost in exposure for some chats. we want to make it as easy as possible to find and join the best, most relevant Spaces every time you open Twitter. if the convo around a Space is taking off, you’ll now start seeing the Spaces card in the Explore/Trending tab on iOS!— Spaces (@TwitterSpaces) October 27, 2021 That’s a significant upgrade in exposure potential, because right now, there’s no way to easily find in-progress Spaces, and unless you follow a host or speaker in a chat, you’ll never even know that it’s happening. Twitter’s looking to improve this with its dedicated Spaces tab, which will showcase popular discussions in real time, while it also recently added Spaces topics to assist in matching the most relevant broadcasts to each user. But discovery, as Clubhouse has also found, is a difficult element, and while it’s one thing to facilitate many audio chats, all happening at the same time, it’s another to draw audiences to them, and boost engagement based on the discussions occurring. As with…

Prosecutors say Ohioan used Twitter in 'pump-and-dump' stock scam – cleveland.com

NEW YORK — An Ohio trader in penny stocks was arrested Tuesday on charges alleging he earned over $1 million illegally by lying repeatedly to his over 70,000 Twitter followers to get them to buy stocks in what authorities are calling a new social media-infused twist on an old stock manipulation game.Steven Gallagher, 50, of Maumee, Ohio, was charged in New York federal court with securities fraud, wire fraud and market manipulation. He was arrested in Ohio. It was not immediately clear who would represent Gallagher at an initial court appearance in Ohio.U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a release that Gallagher “brought old-school boiler room tactics to the Twitter age, and operated a social media pump-and-dump scam that defrauded ordinary investors.”Ricky J. Patel, head of the New York office for Homeland Security Investigations, said Gallagher turned “lies into cash.”“Pump and dump stock schemes cause mistrust in the market and have real victims who often invest large sums of money, only to have their hopes shattered by a fraudster’s greed,” Patel said.Court papers in Manhattan alleged that Gallagher began defrauding followers of a Twitter account he started in September 2019 under the alias “Alex DeLarge,” a gang leader character who…
