President Muhammadu Buhari said Friday that Twitter must meet the Nigerian government’s five conditions before the suspension of the social media platform will be lifted. Mr Buhari said this during his televised broadcast on Friday to mark Nigeria’s 61st independence anniversary. He listed the conditions to include the fact that Twitter must pay attention to national security and cohesion; registration, physical presence and representation in Nigeria; dispute resolution and local content. I have directed that the suspension be lifted but only if the conditions are met, the Nigerian leader said. The Nigerian government suspended Twitter’s operations in June after the social media network deleted a controversial tweet by President Buhari. The suspension has been condemned by many Nigerians, activists and the international community as a clampdown on the freedom of expression. The president made this position known during a broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 61st Independence Anniversary on Friday in Abuja. The Buhari Government suspended the operations of Twitter in Nigeria on June 5, to allow the government put measures in place to address identified negative trends exhibited by the social media platform. Buhari announced that the Presidential Committee he constituted, along with its Technical Team, to engage Twitter to explore the possibility of resolving the issue that led to the suspension of Twitter’s activities in Nigeria had successfully addressed a number of key issues. “Following the suspension of Twitter operations, Twitter Inc. reached out to the Federal Government of Nigeria to resolve the impasse. Subsequently, I constituted a Presidential Committee to engage Twitter to explore the possibility of resolving the issue. “The Committee, along with its Technical Team, has engaged with Twitter and have addressed a number of key issues. Twitter has unveiled an in-development tool that will enable users to display a verified NFT as their profile picture. Mada Aflak, a senior software engineer at Twitter, shared a video demonstrating functionality that allows users to add NFTs to their accounts. Users can simply edit their profile, connect a cryptocurrency wallet, and import their OpenSea collection. Then, they can choose an avatar from their collection of non-fungible token (NFT) digital art. The profile picture will also be marked with a badge to verify that the image is the genuine article, thereby allowing them to flex their hugely expensive CryptoPunk or Bored Ape profile picture and have everyone know it’s legit.
