Palestinians' digital rights 'violated' by censorship on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, new report …

There has been a “dramatic increase” in the censorship of Palestinian political speech on social media over the past two weeks, during the period of intense fighting between Israel and militants in Gaza.Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have all been used by Palestinians to share information from, among a variety of areas, the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah where families face eviction. However the report from 7amleh, The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, shared exclusively with The Independent, argues that social media companies’ moderation attempts and codes of conduct have resulted in numerous citizens’ accounts being taken down.It comes in the context of huge criticism surrounding the Israeli government’s military decisions, which include displacing 52,000 Palestinians via air strikes, causing the deaths of numerous children, bombing the Associated Press and Al Jazeera building, and, on social media, the bizarrely flippant tone of its Twitter account.Overnight, Israel and Hamas have since entered a “mutual and simultaneous” truce, after Israel’s security cabinet agreed to put an end to heavy bombardment which has killed more than 230 Palestinians.Twelve people have been killed In Israel, including two children and a soldier. The Israeli military said 4,340 rockets were fired at Israel by…

Russian internet watchdog decides not to block Twitter

Russian internet watchdog Roskomnadzor has decided not to block Twitter after the US company deleted over 90% of the material the state organ had objected to, the organ said in a press release on May 15. Roskomnadzor said it had “positively assessed” Twitter’s efforts to comply with Russian law, which prohibits the publication material including child pornography, drug use and instructions on how to commit suicide that it accused Twitter of hosting. After the initial warning that the service could be blocked, Roskomnadzor narrowed the bandwidth available to Twitter in Russia from March 10 after the company refused to comply. Although that had little effect on the speed that short text messages can be transmitted, it did slow the download of pictures and video, users reported. The watchdog had threatened to fully block the site on May 15 if Twitter had not made substantial progress in deleting the offending posts. The state censor has now decided that such a move is unnecessary and the US company has largely complied with the requests. According to RKN, over 91% of the posts have been removed. The agency will thus return normal service to Twitter on computers, but it will continue to slow…

Twitter challenges Irish proposals for online safety legislation

Twitter is directly challenging the Government’s legislation on online safety with a robust attack on its proposals to impose financial sanctions, block services and make senior management of companies criminally responsible for breaches of the law. In its opening statement to a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Communications, the social media giant argues that several of the sanctions, as envisaged, would set a “global benchmark” that will have a chilling effect in other regions of the world. “We contend that several of the sanctions as currently envisaged create an unhelpful international precedent: specifically the extent of proposed financial sanctions, the provision for service blocking, and the criminal liability of senior management,” it states. It is the second appearance for Twitter and for Facebook before the committee in the past month. At the last meeting, Twitter and Facebook (especially the former) were lambasted by committee members for allowing anonymous accounts, for trolling, and for abusive content. The Twitter statement is sure to put the company on a collision course with several members of the committee, especially following the controversy surrounding the anonymous account associated with former Sunday Independent columnist Eoghan Harris. “Already we see countries imposing punitive financial penalties or…

Memes Flood Twitter As Bitcoin's Downward Spiral Continues

Twitter users are having a field day creating and sharing memes on Bitcoin.Bitcoin fell to around $40,000 (roughly Rs. 29 lakh) on Wednesday, extending its losses that began with Elon Musk's back-and-forth remarks on the world's largest digital currency over the past week. The Tesla CEO first raised concerns over the rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for mining and transaction of Bitcoin, saying his electric vehicle-making company will no longer accept payments in the digital currency. Then his tweet caused confusion whether Tesla was dumping its Bitcoin holdings.Bitcoin was trading at $39,976 at the time of writing this report, the lowest it has been since Musk's big embrace in February, when Tesla revealed it had bought $1.5 billion (roughly Rs. 10,974 crore) worth of Bitcoins. Even as investors are heartbroken, Twitter users are having a field day, sharing memes about the cryptocurrency, those who have invested in it and Musk, alleging he single-handedly triggered the massive crash.Every Bitcoin Owner To Dogecoin Owners And @elonmusk Right now #dogearmypic.twitter.com/KHgZn8Gx4F— Sensitive Phil (@PhilSensitive) May 18, 2021Bitcoin owners right now pic.twitter.com/726Zcn3PgW— Sagar (@sagarcasm) May 19, 2021#Bitcoin owners every morning after checking Elon musk's tweet. pic.twitter.com/844tzLayMw— El Professor ???? SOS calls for 'Amphotericin B' surge on Twitter as cases of black fungus rise in COVID-19 patients

Health workers wearing PPE suit, admit a Covid patient amid the pandemic. Image used for representation. (PTI) As India reels under the second wave of the coronavirus, the number of cases of a rare infection, mucormycosis, commonly known as black fungus, has seen a spike across the country. The SOS requests on micro-blogging site Twitter, which were earlier mostly about Remdesivir and Tocilizumab, have added another drug to the list, ‘Amphotericin B’, an antifungal medicine. Doctors have noted a surge in cases of black fungus amid patients who were hospitalised and recovering from COVID-19, leading to an increase in the demand for Amphotericin B. With several states like Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka reporting a shortage in the drug’s supply, people have once again turned to Twitter in an attempt to crowdsource the antifungal medicine. Hashtag Trending, May 17, 2021 – Twitter subscription service; Remote worker engagement …

Twitter unveils its subscription service, remote worker engagement comes into question, and Ireland Health Services is hit with a ransomware attack. It’s all the tech news that’s got people buzzing right now. Welcome to Hashtag Trending! It’s Monday, May 17 and I’m your host Alex Coop. Twitter is introducing a tiered service called Twitter Blue. While it’s unclear when Twitter’s subscription service will roll out, the social media giant says it has tested multiple new features. These tested features include the ability to undo tweets, and a fee for using the Tweetdeck dashboard app and Super Follows. WeWork’s CEO Sandeep Mathrani describes the engaged worker as the one that wants to return to the office. “Those who are least engaged are very comfortable working from home,” he told the Wall Street Journal in an interview. Keep in mind WeWork’s business model is anchored to people working in offices, and LinkedIn professionals and others on social media were quick to point that out. Many others fired back, noting productivity in many cases has gone up, and the issues around remote and Zoom fatigue comes from over-scheduling. And lastly, Bleeping Computer is reporting a ransomware attack lodged against the Ireland Health Services.…

Twitter flooded with meme and jokes as Bitcoin price further plunges after Elon musk's tweet

Musk has been an avid supporter of the cryptocurrency and his company back in February announced that it had purchased $1.5 billion in Bitcoin and planned to accept it as payment. The price of Bitcoin further plunged on Sunday after Tesla CEO Elon Musk suggested, in a tweet, that his company may or may not have sold off its Bitcoin holdings. The cryptocurrency traded below $45,000, the lowest since February. Musk’s tweet was in response to an unverified Twitter user, who said: ”Bitcoiners are going to slap themselves next quarter when they find out Tesla dumped the rest of their #Bitcoin holdings. With the amount of hate @elonmusk is getting, I wouldn’t blame him…”. Musk replied saying “indeed”, without suggesting whether Telsa had sold their Bitcoin holdings or was planning to do so. Indeed — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 16, 2021 Earlier on May 12, Musk in a tweet had said that his company has discontinued accepting the cryptocurrency as a form of payment due to environmental concerns. The cryptocurrency dropped as much as 15% to just above $46,000, in the immediate aftermath of the Tesla CEO’s tweet. As Musk and his Tweets continue to impact the cryptocurrency markets, netizens took to…
