But some Northwestern students have also found unexpected friendships through the social media platform.  NU Twitter, a colloquial term for the community students have built, is a digital space for students to share their thoughts on everything from the University to pop culture to their lives. McCormick sophomore Hugh-Jay Yu and a self-described member of NU Twitter said he initially created a Twitter account in high school. It wasn’t until the start of the pandemic that he began to see more NU content on his timeline. “There are people who I’ve never seen in person, but we have that level of knowledge about each other’s lives,” Yu said. “I feel (more) up to date on the people in my life that I follow on Twitter versus the people in my life that I don’t.” According to Medill freshman Elisabeth Betts, NU Twitter has allowed her to not only connect with freshmen,…

Boston Celtics alumni past and present alike weighed in on the recently-announced guilty verdicts returned in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the arresting officer who was put on trial for the killing of George Floyd. Twitter today announced its plans to expand its engineering team in India.As part of these plans, the company announced the appointment of Apurva Dalal as Director of Engineering. Apurva has over two decades of engineering experience spanning global organisations such as Uber, Google, and eBay. He last served as the engineering site lead for Uber Bengaluru. New Delhi, April 16 In a bid to assess racial and gender bias in its artificial intelligence/machine learning systems, Twitter is starting a new initiative called Responsible Machine Learning. Terming it a long journey in its early days, Twitter said the initiative will assess any "unintentional harms" caused by its algorithms. "When Twitter uses ML, it can impact hundreds of millions of Tweets per day and sometimes, the way a system was designed to help could start to behave differently than was intended," said Jutta Williams and Rumman Chowdhury from Twitter. "These subtle shifts can then start to impact the people using Twitter and we want to make sure we're studying those changes and using them to build a better product," they said in a statement late on Thursday. Twitter's 'Responsible ML' working group is interdisciplinary and is made up of people from across the company, including technical, research, trust and safety, and product teams.
