Alex Padilla gets into first Senate Twitter spat with Ted Cruz

Alex Padilla is getting to know the ropes of his new job.The California senator got into his first Twitter spat with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz this week since arriving in the Senate in January. The war of words started Tuesday, the same day the Senate Judiciary Committee held its hearing on gun violence. At the hearing, Padilla, the Democrat who was appointed to fill Vice President Kamala Harris' seat, made the claim that it's easier to buy a gun than vote in many states. "In a majority of states, new voters are able to obtain a rifle quicker than they're able to cast their first ballot," he said. "It seems to me we have our priorities entirely backwards when it comes to this — when we make it easier to buy a gun than we do to cast a ballot." This is demonstrably, laughably false. Find me the Dem that says “it’s abusive to require a photo ID to buy a gun!”They ALL say that about voting.(Except for the CA gubernatorial recall....) https://t.co/YEVqiIbzTq— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) March 24, 2021 Cruz tweeted a clip of Padilla's remarks on Tuesday and called them "demonstrably, laughably false." Twitter Reacts to Jay Leno's Apology for Decades of Racist Jokes About Asians

Jay Leno has issued an apology for a series of racist jokes he's told for decades about Asians, but some aren't buying it.  The former late night host's apology came after a meeting with Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA) president Rob Chan, MANAA founding president Guy Aoki and vice president Lawrence Lim over zoom, after over 10 years of Aoki trying to secure a meeting with Leno to discuss his racist jokes.  Aoki said he initially appealed to Leno's new employers at Fox, where he hosts the game show You Bet Your Life, offering them an ultimatum of firing the host or MANAA would approach sponsors to boycott the project."At the time I did those jokes, I genuinely thought them to be harmless," Leno said in a joint press release with Aoki, according to multiple reports. "I was making fun of our enemy North Korea, and like most jokes, there was a ring of truth to them."  The comedian continued, "At the time, there was a prevailing attitude that some group is always complaining about something, so don’t worry about it. Whenever we received a complaint, there would be two sides to the discussion: Either ‘We need to deal…

Congress set to grill Facebook, Google and Twitter CEOs on extremist content, misinformation

SALT LAKE CITY — Less than 48 hours after Utah Gov. Spencer Cox vetoed a controversial bill aiming to impose new moderation regulations on social media platforms, a U.S. House joint committee will take up some of the same issues in a Thursday hearing that will include the CEOs of Facebook, Google and Twitter. While all three companies say they are continuing to ramp up efforts to fairly and appropriately apply content moderation/take down rules, the chairman of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. D-N.J., described those efforts as merely reactions to social and political pressures and, furthermore, said they are failing to effectively staunch the flow of misinformation and extremist postings. The hearing, “Disinformation Nation: Social Media’s Role in Promoting Extremism and Misinformation,” will include testimony from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. The House Energy and Commerce Committee will be joined by members of two House subcommittees for questions and discussion. In a memo released earlier this week, Pallone wrote that these U.S. tech behemoths are motivated to allow the posting, sharing and distribution of controversial content because it gets the most attention from users and,…

It’s unclear when “undo” will be available. A website is holding a 24-hour digital detox challenge. No phones, TV, gaming, computers, or smart devices could earn you $2,400. “I won't relax when I'm on Twitter”: Kevin Durant fires back at Los Angeles-based rapper who asks …

Los Angeles-based rapper Glasses Malone told Kevin Durant to relax on Twitter, which KD took exception to and fired back. There is definitely no other player like Kevin Durant. Being 6-foot-10, Durant can handle the ball like a guard, shoot the ball like a two-guard and even rebound and block like a center. There is very little this future Hall-Of-Famer can’t do. Despite his on-court success, KD will continue to keep up with his social media antics. Being in his 14th year as a pro, Durant still continues to get into little fiascos on Twitter. This time, the Brooklyn Nets All-Star had an exchange with a rapper. The 2-time NBA champion fired back at the Malone, making it clear that when he was on the social networking platform, there is no relaxing for him. The 32-year-old expressed himself: “There’s No relax champ. No relax when I’m on Twitter. I’m on 10 until the second I close the app. You relax!!” relax big dawg….. your kevin durant life is too sweet! https://t.co/Fv5Ozl8QnG — Glasses Malone (@gmalone) March 23, 2021 https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js There’s No relax champ. Surrey developer wins right to expunge Twitter corruption claims

Surrey developer Bob Cheema claims Surrey businessman Brian Young defamed him on social media A politically active Surrey developer who has been subject to allegations of corruption on social media can have his day in court, a BC Supreme Court judge ruled last Wednesday. Developer Bob Cheema’s defamation lawsuit against Surrey resident Brian Young can proceed, ruled Justice Heather MacNaughton, after Young applied for its dismissal by claiming Cheema was limiting his freedom of expression. The case centres around two political allies of Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum during the October 2018 election. Young and Cheema were both helping McCallum get elected but things went sour thereafter and Young began criticizing McCallum on Twitter, including allegations that Cheema held power over the mayor, particularly with respect to the city’s police force transition. MacNaughton had to weigh the public’s interest as to whether Young’s freedom of expression outweighed Cheema’s right to protect his reputation. MacNaughton’s ruling states there are reasonable grounds for Cheema to proceed with a trial.  “I am satisfied that Mr. Cheema has established, on a balance of probabilities, that the harm he has suffered or is likely to suffer as a result of Mr. Young’s expression is sufficiently serious…

How texts, Twitter and close-knit communities are helping to fuel West Virginia's COVID vaccine …

By Lauren Peace and Lucas Manfield, Mountain State Spotlight “This story was originally published by Mountain State Spotlight. For more stories from Mountain State Spotlight, visit www.mountainstatespotlight.org.”  A line of cars wrapped around the Teays Valley Baptist Church, stretching back toward the interstate. It was a weekend in mid-March, but the Saturday crowd wasn’t there for services; it was hundreds of hopeful West Virginians trying their luck for an unclaimed dose of vaccine. Earlier that afternoon, Jamie Miller had gotten a text from a friend who knew somebody working at the vaccination event in Putnam County. She was told that the parking-lot clinic had an abundance of unclaimed doses. So the Charleston-based artist took to Twitter and Facebook to spread the news. “Giving to anyone, not just 50 and over! Get there if ya need it and pass along to folks who are close,” Miller wrote. West Virginians responded. People piled into cars with hopes of snagging a coveted dose, while others placed calls to neighbors, parents and grandparents, hoping to get their loved ones a step closer to safety. It was the work of an old-fashioned gossip chain with the power of the internet’s reach. In less than an hour, the extra doses…
