Netflix, Spotify and Amazon Prime typically charge one fee for access to a collection of goodies.There are signs, however, that the all-you-can-eat digital subscriptions are becoming more nuanced. Some companies including Disney and Whole Foods, the grocery chain that is owned by Amazon, are charging subscribers more for compelling extras. Others including Spotify and YouTube are experimenting with subscriptions that cost less but come with compromises. Back in June, YouTube Music for Android got a redesigned Now Playing UI that did a great deal to help modernize the streaming service, and it’s now finally coming to iPhones. Update 8/4: Since the weekend, more and more users have encountered the revamped player. Make sure you’re on the latest app version (4.39) on iOS, while ending the current song you’re playing (by closing the mini-player), closing YouTube Music from multitasking, and starting another tune should load the new experience. We’re not seeing this UI on iPad right now because Google does not appear to have created a portrait variant of this interface. Update 7/31: In March, the Now Playing redesign appeared for very few YouTube Music users with iPhones. As of yesterday, a wider rollout seems to be underway. There are a handful of reports in the past 24 hours, but it’s still not widely available for all. It’s unclear why the launch took this long as it fully appeared on Android in June of 2020. This is a really fascinating clip featuring a very young Ralph Sampson vs. a very young Arvidas Sabonis. We never got to see either of these guys truly live up to their potential. Sampson had some good years before injuries limited his mobility and while Sabonis was drafted in 1986, the same year Johnny Dawkins was taken out of Duke by San Antonio, he was not allowed to play in the West until the Soviet Union fell. He spent six years in Spain before Portland took a chance on him despite his own serious injuries. In the ACC, Sampson simply overwhelmed opponents with his size and athleticism. As you’ll see here, he met his match in Sabonis. He was just 17 at the time and very thin, far from the 292 he would later play at. It’s kind of amazing to watch these two star-crossed big men. They both showed immense potential and achieved a lot of it. It’s really a shame that injuries slowed them both and that the USSR would not allow Sabonis to play abroad. When Lefty Driesell, one of the great salesman in the history of college basketball, took the Maryland job in 1969, he promised to make it the UCLA of the East. And it made sense. Hadn’t he done an incredible job at little Davidson? And wasn’t Maryland, close to DC and Baltimore talent, perfectly situated to build a powerful program? It all seemed so tangible and as Driesell began to recruit, the pieces of a great program fell into place: John Lucas. Tom McMillen. Len Elmore. And, very nearly, Moses Malone, who shocked the world when he went pro in the ABA directly out of high school. In the spring of 1974, Maryland and NC State were both Top Three programs and of course only one could go to the NCAA tournament. State won in the ACC Tournament and beat UCLA in the Final Four before knocking off Marquette for the title (the NCAA expanded the field for 1975). Maryland lost McMillen and Elmore after the 1974 season but UCLA lost four starters and Driesell, perhaps sensing weakness and a chance to get a statement win, invited UCLA to the MIT - the Maryland Invitational Tournament.
