Looking to upgrade your WFH setup? Here's how YouTuber Sean Chandler works

CNN —   Welcome to Influenced, where we interview creators of all kinds about the gear they use to do their job — and their advice for those looking to follow in their footsteps. This week, we chatted with YouTube movie critic Sean Chandler about how he’s upgraded his home studio over the years, and why you probably already have better equipment than you think. Chandler shot his first video — a review of the highly polarizing 2016 Ghostbusters movie — on a whim, using his old MacBook’s built-in webcam and a Blue Spark microphone he had borrowed from a friend and plugged into a USB interface. “The audio was nice and crisp, and then just terrible picture from an old webcam built into a computer,” says Chandler. “And didn’t have any lights in front of me, anything fancy, anything that would make it look good. So I just started with what I had.” As his hobby grew into a legitimate source of revenue (and eventually, a full-time career as a movie critic), Chandler gradually made upgrades that have allowed him to produce high-quality videos that are decidedly sharper-looking than those early MacBook clips. Here’s what Chandler’s setup looks like…

Minecraft's 'Worst' Server Was Exploited So Hard, Griefers Could See The Future

The tale of how hacker group Nerds Inc. took over 2b2t—Minecraft’s oldest so-called anarchy server—is convoluted and painstaking. It’s the story of how 300,000 players were constantly tracked, 15,000 bases discovered, and over 200 million items stolen. And it was all achieved exploiting not the software intended to keep the server functioning properly, but by conditioning the people who maintain that software.2b2t is infamous. Short for “2 builders 2 tools”, it is to Minecraft what 8chan is to forums: a den of unregulated freedom, with all the extraordinary creativity and the ugliest elements that invariably contains. Players who use the server will encounter racism, porn, gore, and most recently, some of the most intricate griefing ever seen. Perhaps the best coverage of this came from RPS’s Brendy Caldwall, in early 2016 before it had reached wider public attention—there he captured its deeply unwelcoming ways, how it spawns players in a barren location of utter horror, where survival is close to impossible.Unmoderated, and all under the barely-watching eye of server admin ‘Hausmaster’, you’re as likely to stumble upon a mountain-high swastika or skyscraper-like cock as you are a town-sized towering statue of Jesus. With a chat that was primarily used to…

YouTube Adds in Live-Stream Trailers and Live Polls as it Builds its New Streaming Commerce …

As TikTok continues to refine its live-streaming options, YouTube is also giving its live-stream tools more focus, with two new additions to help maximize engagement and awareness of live broadcasts within the app. First off, YouTube's expanding its Premiere trailers option to upcoming live-streams, which will enable creators to add a short preview clip to the stream event page. As explained by YouTube's Conor Kavanagh: "Last year, we introduced Trailers which enable creators to add a 15-second to 3-minute clip to the upcoming or scheduled page of a Premiere. Now we're delighted to announce that trailers are now available for upcoming and scheduled live-streams." The option will provide another way to entice potential viewers along to your broadcasts, with a quick showcase of what they'll get from your stream. To set up a live-stream trailer, you'll first need to upload the preview clip as a regular YouTube video. You'll then be able to choose that clip as your trailer in your live-stream event set-up.  Live-stream creators will be able to add trailers via YouTube's Live Control Room, with the option available to all channels with at least 1,000 subscribers and zero strikes. In addition to this, YouTube's also expanding access to…

Netflix, Beware: YouTube Could Bring in More Money in 2021 | Chart

The fast-approaching object in Netflix’s rearview mirror? That’s YouTube. The Google-owned video giant on Tuesday reported $7 billion in Q2 revenue, which, considering it marked an 84% spike from the same time last year, is impressive enough on its own. But YouTube’s big second quarter stood out for another reason: YouTube will very likely bring in more money than Netflix this year. The two companies are already neck-and-neck when it comes to quarterly sales. Netflix last week reported $7.3 billion in Q2 revenue — only slightly more than YouTube’s haul for the quarter. And for the first half of 2021, Netflix reported $14.5 billion in sales, compared to $13 billion for YouTube. Netflix may have a slight lead right now, but once you factor in how fast the two companies are growing, it’s easy to see YouTube pulling ahead by the end of 2021. The chart below helps make it clear: YouTube’s recent revenue growth is blowing Netflix’s out of the water. Netflix’s revenue the past two quarters increased 24% and 19% year-over-year, respectively; YouTube’s revenue jumped 50% during the first quarter, before its 84% jump during the spring. At the same time, Netflix isn’t bringing in subscribers like it...Read…

Netflix, Beware: YouTube Could Bring in More Money in 2021 | Chart

Both companies can expect $30 billion in revenue this year — but they’re growing at two different rates The two companies are already neck-and-neck when it comes to quarterly sales. And for the first half of 2021, Netflix reported $14.5 billion in sales, compared to $13 billion for YouTube. Netflix’s revenue the past two quarters increased 24% and 19% year-over-year, respectively; YouTube’s revenue jumped 50% during the first quarter, before its 84% jump during the spring. At the same time, Netflix isn’t bringing in subscribers like it did during the early days of the pandemic. Netflix added “only” 1.5 million customers during Q2, and even lost 400,000 customers in the U.S. and Canada — its most lucrative markets — for only the second time ever. This was in stark contrast to…
