Reddit beats Facebook and Snapchat to buy TikTok competitor Dubsmash

The deal gives Reddit a surprise upper hand in a race to capture the runaway success of Chinese-owned TikTok, Reddit has thrown its hat into the ring against TikTok with the acquisition of Berlin-founded short video-sharing app Dubsmash for an unknown sum. The privately held social network said on Sunday that it would keep Dubsmash as a separate app while integrating its video creation tools into its own service. In a company blog post, Reddit pointed to Dubsmash's popularity among female users and ethnic minority creators, with about 25pc of all black teenagers in the United States using the app. The sale makes Reddit a surprising winner in the bidding war that has unfolded over Dubsmash, which at one time was reportedly being courted by Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter. Founded in Germany in 2014 and now based in New York City, it has bounced back from a dire decline in users to become one of the most promising contenders for TikTok's viral video crown. News of the deal was first broken by Silicon Valley insiders' outlet The Information, prompting Reddit to rush out an announcement reportedly slated for tomorrow. we are so excited to announce that we’ll be joining forces…

Dealers turn to Snapchat to attract younger buyers

Consumers, particularly those younger than 30, are spending more time on social media during the pandemic. But many dealerships have yet to venture beyond Facebook to apps such as Snapchat that have become a haven for millennials and Generation Z.Data shows that the age groups drawn to Snapchat aren't shying away from the car market. Millennials and Generation Z were the only two segments for which vehicle registrations rose from the first quarter of 2020 to the second quarter, according to an Experian study. Snapchat says it reaches 75 percent of Americans born from 1981 through 2010 who make up those two generations. Jeff Gonzales, CEO of marketing company AET Automotive, said dealerships that invest in Snapchat tend to have little competition at the moment. Absa and Snapchat team up to teach youth about finances

Absa has launched a game in conjunction with Snapchat which aims to teach young South Africans about the value of money management. The game makes use of augmented reality to teach the player investment tips that prepares them for the working world. Unlike most Snapchat augmented reality experiences, which refresh when the user returns, the Absa game will remember the user for 15 days to create a continuous and more well-rounded experience. To play the game, you will need to open the Snapchat lens by making use of this link. If you are accessing the link via a computer, the ‘snapcode’ must be snapped. The game operates similarly to the popular Tamagotchis that took the 90s by storm, as you will have a pet lion to care for. The health of the lion is linked to the interest received in the player’s money account balance. Simple steps such as reading a banking tip also earns the player more credit. The goal is to earn as much play money credit as possible before the game finishes. “The partnership with Snapchat provided an opportunity to not only embrace new technologies but moreover communicate with a younger generation about the conventions of banking,”…
