Reddit plots a path to $1B in ad sales, but first it needs to convince brands

Reddit has finally revealed details behind its ad business and daily user base, and now says it has a path to $1 billion in revenue, but that’s up to three years away. The new disclosure shows that Reddit still has some growing to do to catch up to rivals like Twitter and Snapchat, as the company tries to win over brands with its unique proposition in the world of social media. Reddit disclosed for the first time that it hit the $100 million mark in ad revenue in 2019, and it has 52 million daily active users, an increase of 44% since last year. Reddit has never had to divulge such stats since it is not a publicly traded company like its competitors, and it first released them to The Wall Street Journal this week. On Thursday, Reddit also told Ad Age that it predicts its growth trajectory will take it to the $1 billion in yearly revenue in two to three years. “The reason why we shared daily numbers, I mean, obviously that’s a big number,” says Jen Wong, Reddit’s chief operating officer, referring to the user numbers. As for the ad business: “We’re really early in our life cycle…

Why Every Social Media Platform Is Blending Into One Big Mush

Illustration: Joel BenjaminLast week, like a lot of people, I idly went to check my notifications on Instagram. Instead, I was taken straight to the app's shopping feature. I was confused. The buttons had been moved around and my muscle memory had led me into a trap. When I went to post, a similar thing happened. The button took me to Reels, a newish 15-second video clip carousel feature. I didn't want to go on Reels. I didn't want to go shopping, either. In 2020, our social media apps have been inching ever closer together. Back in May, Instagram rolled out Instagram Shop, which closely resembles the reseller app Depop in style and functionality. In August came Reels, which is basically their version of TikTok. Then on the 17th of November, Twitter launched Fleets, which is almost no different to Instagram Stories, which in turn was an old copycat of Snapchat Stories, which was – deep breath – also copied by Facebook Stories. Today, you can basically use all apps for the same things. Without sounding like a Luddite, this mushing together can feel a bit… jarring, or at least, confusing. Each app used to have its place: Instagram is supposed to be…

Why more fashion brands are investing in Snapchat's Bitmoji

In its aim to stay competitive among social platforms, Snapchat has launched a new string of high profile-fashion partnerships. Snapchat worked with Ralph Lauren in November and Jordan Brand in September on a number of initiatives, both on the main Snapchat app and with the platform’s subsidiary company Bitmoji. And on Thursday afternoon, Snapchat will roll out a third fashion partnership in three months with Levi’s, which includes releasing a collection of Levi’s products that people can use to dress their virtual Bitmoji avatars or buy in real life to dress themselves. Snap is aiming to link with fashion partners using both time-tested tactics and new ones — last week with Ralph Lauren, it introduced the ability to scan a fabric logo on clothing using its app and be directed to online content. Snapchat has lagged behind other social platforms, with 46 million monthly active U.S. users as of October 2020, while Instagram has more than 120 million monthly active users in the U.S. But the increase in brand partnerships and the advertising dollars they brought in over the last year have helped the platform monetize the audience it does have. Snap ads typically start at around $3,000 per month,…

Akram had to come he couldn’t, Hermès they took him from me on the plane. But there, because I am well installed, that this evening I see Manon, Julien… I feel too good and I am too happy. I couldn’t stop thinking that night, I couldn’t sleep. I slept very late, around five in the morning. (…) But I thought about it, I tell myself that this is a new adventure. I…

Racist NDSU Snapchat group brought to light by Black Lives Matter members

FARGO — Several North Dakota State University students are in hot water for being a part of what the university is calling a racist group on the social media app Snapchat. The group is made up of mostly white students, and the name of the group includes a Black racial slur. A message shared by one of the group members said, "We're not racist, we just prefer white people." A member of Fargo-Moorhead's Black Lives Matter chapter, who wanted to remain anonymous, said these words struck a sour chord with her and her friends. "It was just really disturbing knowing that they're adults, and they know the kind of consequences that happen with saying things like that," she said in a phone interview. Casey Peterson, NDSU's dean of students, caught wind of this group about a month ago, and dealt with the NDSU students involved immediately. "We occasionally get things like this, and it hurts," Peterson said. When F-M Black Lives Matter shared the Snapchat group on its Instagram page, it included photos of some of the students involved, and one of those students responded to the post, saying he was guilty by association, and the group was intended as…

Some iPhone 12 series users say videos appear overexposed on Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat …

The iPhone 12 series offers some of the best smartphone cameras right now. And the iPhone 12 Pro Max takes that up a notch with its larger sensor than what’s found on the 12 Pro. Resulting images from the bigger sensor usually have a more natural depth of field and shots in low-light situations are a lot less grainy and contain more details than images shot on the other iPhone 12 models. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini Of course, the difference isn’t mind-boggling, however, for those who love capturing images on their phones, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the route to take. That being said, as more users have begun getting their hands on the new iPhones and have started sharing images and videos on social media platforms, many have noticed one big problem. And that is — overexposed videos. We’ve shared several reports from users who are noticing videos being overexposed on their new iPhone 12 series devices below.
