Durham Regional Police have charged a 29-year-old man after he allegedly pretended he was a teen in order to begin a relationship with a 13-year-old girl he met online. Investigators say the suspect met the girl on Snapchat where he posed a 15-year-old boy in order to befriend her. “They then met in person and started a relationship,” a police release states. “After a period of months, the relationship became physical.” Investigators say the girl eventually learned that the suspect was much older than he portrayed, and contacted police. On Friday, April 11, police concluded their investigation and charged Christian Senato, 29, of Toronto, with sexual assault, sexual interference, luring a person under 16 to facilitate the offence of sexual assault, and luring a person under 16 to facilitate the offence of sexual interference.

A 19-year-old man is accused of sending “sexually explicit” messages and Snapchats to a teenage girl in Colorado, deputies said.

As Bloomberg News reported, the SEC contended in a hearing Friday (Dec. 8) that the court should take into consideration the guilty pleas by Binance and its former CEO last month. The SEC sued Binance and Changpeng Zhao, the former chief executive, in June, accusing the company of misleading investors, violating securities regulation and mishandling customer funds. The company has asked the court to dismiss the case. Binance last month pleaded guilty to a criminal charge and agreed to pay $4.3 billion in fines to resolve a long-running Department of Justice investigation.  Zhao, the company’s founder and CEO of Binance, also pleaded guilty to violating criminal U.S. anti-money laundering requirements, and agreed to resign. Richard Teng, who had been Binance’s global head of regional markets, stepped in to take over as CEO. In addition to the DOJ, Binance also reached resolutions with Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Office of Foreign Assets Control and Financial Crimes Enforcement Network in connection with those agencies’ investigations into the company’s registration, compliance and sanctions issues. The social media platform’s Snapchat+ offering recorded more than $20 million in revenue in November for the first time, TechCrunch reported Friday (Dec. 8), citing data app intelligence provider Apptopia.  Subscription revenue rose by double digits in almost every place Snapchat+ has gone live, the report adds. As TechCrunch noted, this milestone places Snapchat+ well ahead of X’s Premium service, which last month recorded $6.2 million in in-app revenue. Snapchat had announced in September that Snapchat+ had more than 5 million subscribers, up from 3 million five months earlier. The Apptopia data shows that the subscription plan took in more than $31 million in consumer spending before app store commissions, and was up 23.4% month over month. Last month saw reports that Snapchat was testing ad-free subscriptions to drive recurring revenues, becoming the latest social media company to take that path. The new ad-free tier, being tested in Australia and Norway, costs three times the amount of the standard Snapchat+ subscription.
