French police foil Paris bomb attack outside US bank – Community Newspaper Group

French police stopped an apparent bomb attack outside a US bank in Paris early Saturday when they arrested a person about to set off a homemade explosive device, officials and sources close to the case told AFP. The incident occurred around 3:30 am (0130 GMT) in front of a Bank of America building in the chic 8th arrondissement, a couple of streets from the Champs-Elysees. Police grabbed the suspect just after he placed a device, made of five litres of liquid (1.3 US gallons), believed to be fuel, and an ignition system, one of the sources said. After his arrest, the suspect claimed to both a minor and a Senegalese citizen, according to a police source, who cautioned that the authorities were still verifying his identity. He was accompanied by a second person, who took flight when officers arrived to arrest the pair.  The ignition component had 650 grams (23 ounces) of explosive powder in it, according to an initial assessment. The whole device was taken to the Paris police's forensics lab for full analysis.  France's counter-terrorism prosecutor's office told AFP it had immediately taken over the investigation, and confirmed the suspect caught was in police custody. Commission investigates Snapchat’s compliance with child protection rules under the Digital …

Credit:Unsplash) This article is brought to you in association with the European Commission. The European Commission has opened formal proceedings to investigate if Snapchat is ensuring a high level of safety, privacy and security for children online, in compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA). Snapchat may have breached the DSA by exposing minors to grooming attempts and recruitment for criminal purposes, as well as to information about the sale of illegal goods, like drugs, or age-restricted products, such as vapes and alcohol. The investigation will focus on five areas. Age assurance According to Snapchat’s own Terms and conditions, users must be at least 13 years old to use the platform. The Commission suspects that Snapchat’s reliance on self-declaration as an age assurance measure is insufficient. It neither prevents children under the age of 13 from accessing the service, nor adequately assesses whether users are younger than 17 years old, which is necessary to ensure an age-appropriate experience. Moreover, the Commission suspects that the tool for users to report to Snapchat the presence of minors under the age of 13 on its service is not available to users on the app. Grooming and recruitment of minors for criminal activities The Commission suspects that Snapchat

Colorado mom who’s son died celebrates verdicts against Meta, YouTube – The Denver Post

By THOMAS PEIPERT and HANNAH SCHOENBAUM, Associated Press THORNTON — A Colorado woman whose son died from a fentanyl-laced pill he bought through social media celebrated a pair of verdicts this week against Meta and YouTube that she said opened the door for companies to be held responsible for harms to children using their platforms. “The truth is out, and it’s time that they are held accountable for the design of the platforms,” said Kimberly Osterman, whose son Max died in 2021 at age 18. “They put profits over safety.” Flipping through photo albums Thursday at her home in Colorado, Osterman reflected on “the days before social media. The days before the infinite scrolling lured him in.” Photos of him in frames with hearts and angel’s wings dotted the shelves. Osterman said Max arranged to meet a drug dealer he connected with on Snapchat and purchased what he thought was Percocet. The pill was laced with a deadly dose of fentanyl, and he was dead the next morning. Osterman is pursuing a wrongful death lawsuit that is separate from cases decided this week. In Los Angeles on Wednesday, a jury found both YouTube and Meta, which owns and operates platforms

EU probes Snapchat over child safety, illegal content concerns | Daily Sabah

The European Commission on Thursday launched a formal investigation into Snapchat to assess potential violations of the Digital Services Act, citing concerns that the platform may be exposing children to harmful content, criminal activity and illegal products. The Commission said it opened proceedings to determine whether Snapchat is acting in line with the Digital Services Act (DSA). It said that it suspects the platform may have exposed children to harmful content, criminal activities and the sale of illegal products. The investigation was launched for several reasons, including age verification, child exploitation risks and the possible steering of minors toward criminal activities, it said, adding that Snapchat’s default settings may not provide sufficient privacy, safety and protection. Under the EU’s tech rules, major digital platforms operating in Europe are required to comply with the bloc’s regulations. The Commission can impose hefty fines on digital platforms found in breach of the rules. In cases of repeated violations, the platform concerned could ultimately be barred from operating in the EU.eu

Snapchat joins Pornhub on EU’s child safety blacklist – Courthouse News Service

BRUSSELS (CN) — The European Union opened a formal child safety investigation into Snapchat on Thursday, putting the app in the same regulatory crosshairs as Pornhub, XVideos and other major pornographic websites — simultaneously found in breach of the bloc’s internet content law. The targets — Snapchat, PornHub, Stripchat, XNXX and XVideos — all stand accused of leaving minors exposed to harmful content through lax age-checking, inadequate safety settings or worse. In the case of Snapchat, regulators suspect choices baked into the platform leave children exposed to grooming, criminal recruitment and illegal content: Minors are automatically recommended to strangers through the “Find Friends” feature; push notifications run by default; and new users get almost no guidance on privacy settings. Age-checking is equally lax — Snapchat asks users to confirm they’re at least 13, but Brussels suspects the system neither stops younger children from joining nor flags users under 17 for stricter protections. Content moderation isn’t keeping up either. The commission suspects Snapchat’s tools miss posts pointing children toward drugs, vapes and other illegal products, and that reporting mechanisms are buried — possibly designed to discourage use. The investigation absorbs a Dutch probe opened in September into vape sales to minors

Elon Musk pauses changes to X’s creator revenue-sharing program after backlash

Social media platform X swiftly backtracked on its announcement regarding new rules for creator monetization, which had focused on payouts based on engagement from a creator’s local audience. Late Tuesday, X Head of Product Nikita Bier announced that, starting Thursday, the platform will change its policy around payouts and will give more emphasis to impressions from the poster’s region. His rationale was that the platform should disincentivize gaming the algorithm by posting about the U.S. or Japan to gain the attention of those larger audiences. “We will be giving more weight to impressions from your home region—to encourage content that resonates with people in your country, in neighboring countries and people who speak your language,” Bier wrote on X. “While we appreciate everyone’s opinion on American politics, we hope this will disincentivize gaming the attention of US or Japanese accounts and instead, drive diverse conversations on the platform. We invite creators to start building an audience locally. X will be a much richer community when there are relevant posts for people in all parts of the world.” This drew a lot of criticism from users worldwide who said they posted about various topics in different languages, like English, in an

Bucks County Man Pleads Guilty to Statutory Sexual Assault in Exploitation Ring Case

On February 12th, Jon Van Ingen , 68, pled guilty to statutory sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl. Van Ingen remains free on $150,000 bail while awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for May 8, 2026.   As we previously reported , Van Ingen was charged in October 2024 after Zachary McCauley , 30, allegedly arranged meetings with three men, including Van Ingen, to engage in sexual intercourse with the minor victim. Bucks County prosecutors allege McCauley, of Louisville, Kentucky, groomed the victim by posing as a 17-year-old named “Jake” and befriending her on Snapchat. McCauley reportedly communicated with the victims for weeks before coercing her into sending him child sexual abuse material (“CSAM”) through Snapchat. According to former Bucks County District Attorney Jennifer Schorn , McCauley threatened to harm the victim’s mother if she did not comply with his demands.   Officials further allege that McCauley directed the victim to create a profile on the dating app Grindr and share the login information with him, which McCauley used to advertise the victim for commercial sex. McCauley allegedly arranged numerous encounters with men through the Grindr profile, which led to the meeting with Van Ingen and Randy Quinn , 43.
