SAUL LOEB/AFP via Getty Images Twitter announced Tuesday it's relaunching its public application program for verified status, marked by a blue check. The program was paused in 2017 after Twitter granted the verified blue check-mark to one of the organizers of the white supremacist Charlottesville rally, sparking outrage. Twitter has now proposed a set of new policies for the program, which include the possibility that accounts have their blue check-marks taken away if they repeatedly break Twitter's rules. This means President Donald Trump, who will in January lose his "world leader" protections for rule violations in January, could be in danger of losing his verified status if he continues to tweet the way he has done in the past. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Twitter is rebooting its verification system, and the proposed new guidelines could see persistent rule-breakers stripped of their coveted blue check-marks.Twitter gives "verified" status to selected accounts belonging to public figures and organizations, signified by a blue check mark next to their account name. Ted Cruz set conservative Twitter on fire as he tore into Jack Dorsey, the platform’s CEO, during a recent Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, creating the sort of viral moment senators crave from such high-profile exchanges. “Facebook and Twitter and Google have massive power. They have a monopoly on public discourse in the online arena,” Cruz told Dorsey and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, whom the Texas Republican and other GOP members of the committee had subpoenaed to address what they view as “censorship” and “suppression” by Big Tech during the 2020 election. “Your policies are applied in a partisan and selective manner,” Cruz said, demanding that Dorsey and Zuckerberg produce data showing how often they flag or block Republican candidates and elected officials as opposed to Democrats. “What a moment,” right-wing commentator Dinesh D’Souza tweeted, sharing a clip from the hearing with his 1.9 million followers. “This is almost TOO GOOD,” tweeted Dan Bongino, another conservative commentator, urging his 2.7 million followers to “Watch Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey absolutely squirm in his chair as Ted Cruz goes full trial lawyer on him.” IN-DEPTH: Cornyn, Cruz not holding out much hope for Trump to pull off re-election As…

One on Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium was certainly on the small end in the grand scheme of things, but it was weird nevertheless. Late in the third quarter of the Utah Utes’ season opener against the USC Trojans — an eventual 33-17 Utah loss — ESPN’s television cameras literally went out, leaving fans and even commentators Dave Flemming and Rod Gilmore, who were working the game from their homes, unable to see the action on the field. As you might expect, Twitter users had some great reactions as the whole deal was unfolding. In addition to @POTUS, the Biden team on Inauguration Day also will take over accounts including @WhiteHouse, @VP, @FLOTUS and @PressSec. Twitter’s plans were first reported by Politico. “Twitter is actively preparing to support the transition of White House institutional Twitter accounts on January 20th, 2021,” a Twitter rep said Friday. “As we did for the presidential transition in 2017, this process is being done in close consultation with the National Archives and Records Administration.” In the nearly two weeks since major news outlets projected Biden had won the 2020 U.S. presidential election, Trump and his cohorts have continued push conspiracy theories about widespread voter fraud without any credible supporting evidence (including on Twitter, which has flagged numerous tweets by Trump as disputed or misleading). After Trump leaves office, he will lose the special exemption that Twitter extends to political leaders under which the social network flags (but does not remove) posts that would be considered policy violations for regular users, CEO Jack Dorsey said at a Senate hearing this week. “If an account suddenly is not a world leader anymore, that particular policy goes away,” Dorsey said. Currently, @POTUS has 32.8 million followers on Twitter while Trump’s personal @realDonaldTrump account has 88.9 million. After Barack Obama left office in 2017, tweets from his administration on the @POTUS account were archived on a new account, @POTUS44, and Vice President Biden’s tweets from @VP were moved to @VP44, both of which are maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). A @POTUS45 account on Twitter, which presumably will house Trump’s official tweets during…
