Youtube News, Headlines, and Insights From Across The Web

Charlie The Unicorn (& 9 Other Retro YouTube Shows You Forgot About)

Back in the day, YouTube was the hub of creativity. It's easy to get nostalgic about "old YouTube" because nowadays, it seems like there is drama on the platform from left to right. Top-performing YouTube stars such as Jeffree Star, Shane Dawson, Logan Paul, and Trisha Paytas are getting cancelled on a daily basis, and these influencers are disappointing us with ignorant comments and deceiving behavior. Because of all this, it makes us really miss the old school days of the platform, back when the sole purpose of the website was to make people smile and laugh with unique videos. With that being said, here are the 10 best retro youtube shows and channels from years ago that you might have completely forgotten about. 10 POTTER PUPPET PALS Potter Puppet Pals was a cheery musical saga dedicated to all the Harry Potter fans out there who couldn't get enough of the series. Thirteen years ago, you couldn't go anywhere without hearing people belting out the Potter Puppet Pals "Mysterious Ticking Noise" song. Even people who didn't consider themselves to be Potter fans had the entire song memorized, and everyone would sing it with their friends while giggling hysterically at the lyrics. It remains a YouTube classic that still holds a place in our hearts to this day. 9 LIAM KYLE SULLIVAN (MUFFINS/SHOES/LET ME BORROW THAT TOP) Before Jenna Marbles and even before Smosh, Liam Kyle Sullivan was the original YouTube funny guy. Back when YouTube was all about making homemade skits with low-quality costumes and cheap camera equipment, Sullivan was the master of making people laugh with his silly little videos. His most popular skits included "Shoes," "Let Me Borrow That Top," and "Muffins," where he played outlandish characters with the most quotable punchlines. He was an unforgettable legend back in the day, and…

Google orients Stadia towards YouTube audience with 'One Hand Clapping,' 'Dead by Daylight …

There's a new slate of 19 video games coming to cloud streaming service Google Stadia, with a sizable proportion well suited to the creation of accessible, reaction-friendly content for YouTube viewerships. When Google Stadia launched in November 2019, it was with a 22-strong roster that included "Assassin's Creed Odyssey." "Destiny 2m" "Mortal Kombat 11," "Red Dead Redemption 2" and three "Tomb Raider" games.Eighteen of the initial 22 could be said to appeal to traditional console gamers, but Google's latest pitch, as unveiled during a July 14 Stadia Connect video, appears more cognizant of another part of its customer base on YouTube. Not that its YouTube Gaming audience is anathema to core console and PC games -- far from it -- but YouTube has nonetheless given rise to innumerable variety gaming channels that feature engaging, novel, experimental experiences, often sourced from independent developers, and provoking strong and often surprising reactions in hosts and viewers alike."Outcasters," then, is quite a different prospect from the studio behind first-person shooter "Brink," the multiplayer modes for "Gears of War 4" and "Gears 5," and the PC version of "Halo: The Master Chief Collection."Instead of a sci-fi shooter, it's a bright and vibrant multiplayer scramble, whose characters look like rascally Funko Pops and whose curved-trajectory projectiles have more swerve on them than a Lionel Messi free kick. There's no date or price but it's exclusive to Stadia, fits well with the variety gaming sentiment and, given that other Stadia Connect titles are due by February 2021, doesn't appear too far off.Tactical, trap-setting, tower defense game "Orcs Must Die! 3" is available now and is also hoping to benefit from an Only on Stadia designation, while three untitled projects from games studios Harmonix (music-oriented "Rock Band" and "Thumper"), Supermassive Games (horrors "Until Dawn" and "The Dark Pictures Anthology") and Uppercut…

State Troopers' recruitment video too hot for YouTube to handle because of 10 seconds

Ten seconds at the end of a recruitment video for the Alaska State Troopers was too politically charged for YouTube, which has rejected an ad placement by the Department of Public Safety, Must Read Alaska has learned. In the video, the grand landscapes of Alaska are shown, and the values of being close to the communities are woven into the pitch for law enforcement officers to come north and apply to become a member of the storied Alaska State Troopers, if the jobs they’re stuck in in the Lower 48 seem to be losing their luster or if they don’t feel supported by their communities. At the end, Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy says a few words — 40 words to be exact: “Hi, I’m Mike Dunleavy, Governor of the Great State of Alaska. I support law enforcement because our public safety depends on it. So if you’re thinking about making a change, think about coming to Alaska we’d love to have you.” This week, the Department of Public Safety was notified that Google/YouTube canceled authorization of pay-per-click advertisement as it was interpreted to be political and potentially an election advertisement because of Dunleavy’s comments supporting law enforcement and encouraging people to apply to the DPS ranks. The ad could only be placed if the governor’s words supporting law enforcement were removed. The advertisement has not been actually deleted from the platform, but the department is not able to pay for mass distribution. While it can still be viewed and shared organically on YouTube, censorship can severely limit the DPS’s ability to reach potential applicants.

Tattoo artist pleads no contest to vehicular manslaughter in LA crash that killed YouTube personality

VAN NUYS — A tattoo artist is facing up to four years in state prison for crashing a McLaren luxury sports car in Valley Village, killing YouTube personality Corey La Barrie on his 25th birthday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday. Daniel Joseph Silva, now 27, of North Hollywood, pleaded no contest Tuesday to one felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter in connection with the May 10 crash that killed Barrie, who was a passenger in the vehicle, according to Deputy District Attorney Yasmin Fardghassemi. He was initially charged with murder in connection with the crash. Silva was driving the 2020 McLaren 600LT at high speed eastbound on Huston Street when he lost control of the car, which ran off the road and hit a stop sign and tree on the northeast corner of Huston and Carpenter Avenue, police said. Silva suffered non-life-threatening injuries. La Barrie died at a hospital that night of multiple blunt force injuries, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. La Barrie was part of a YouTube duo with Crawford Collins, and the two had more than 100,000 subscribers on their YouTube channel, according to Michael Kraut and Brian Breiter, attorneys representing the La Barrie family. He also had more than 335,000 subscribers on his own YouTube channel and 340,000 Instagram followers. “To lose a loved one is tragic in and of itself, but the devastating details of this case make it almost impossible for Corey’s family to come to terms with,” Breiter said. Silva — who appeared on the tattoo-competition TV show “Ink Master” — has remained behind bars since his arrest May 18, jail records show. He is due back in a Van Nuys courtroom Aug. 13 for sentencing.

Lawsuit Alleging YouTube Violated Constitution by Taking Down QAnon Videos Dismissed

A lawsuit alleging that YouTube violated the Constitution's First Amendment by removing videos promoting the QAnon conspiracy theory has been thrown out by a federal judge.U.S. District Judge Beth Freeman dismissed the suit against YouTube parent company Google on Tuesday. The complaint was filed last year by a group of self-described "conservative content creators" who claimed that their rights were violated when YouTube suspended their accounts. The judge found that the plaintiffs failed to prove that Google, as a private company, was acting on behalf of the government—the only entity liable for First Amendment claims."Based on the inapplicability of any of the four state action tests outlined by the Supreme Court... the Court finds that Plaintiffs have failed to plead a proper First Amendment claim due to their failure to sufficiently allege that Defendants' conduct constituted state action," Freeman wrote in her decision.Freeman dismissed the First Amendment claim "with prejudice," meaning that the plaintiffs cannot not appeal the decision in federal court. She was not convinced by arguments that YouTube was forced to act on behalf of the government by members of Congress who "demanded that the unpopular speech dubbed 'misinformation,' and QAnon-related speech be limited and erased."Lawyers for the…

Conservative YouTube host slammed for racist remarks targeting Asian Bay Area TV news reporter

A conservative political commentator is being slammed for racist remarks targeting veteran Bay Area TV news reporter Betty Yu.Steven Crowder, the host of the political podcast and YouTube channel "Louder with Crowder," made the comments during a segment on his show Wednesday focusing on the closure of San Francisco's only In-N-Out location for failure to check customers' vaccination status. "San Francisco In-N-Out, they've been in a battle with the city over – let me just let them tell you the story, vaccine requirements," Crowder said. He then proceeds to play a video clip of a KPIX news segment, to which Crowder reacts to seeing Yu by saying, "Oh, that is an aggressively Asian face." One of Crowder's co-hosts, comedian Dave Landau, then says, "Easy." The rest of the "Louder with Crowder" segment went as follows: Crowder: "It is a — I mean that just means if you were a skier it would be like a black diamond you'd have to drop in on a chopper."  Landau: "Where's Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz?" Crowder: "The city confirmed that it closed a private business for not acting like the health – for not acting like the FDA." Crowder: "By the way, the…
