This post is sponsored by Boulevard Bikes.File this one under "Think locally and act globally."There's an older gentleman who stays at a healthcare center located near the Streetsblog Chicago headquarters in the Uptown. He's a friendly, dapper person who often spends time outside in a wheelchair on the sidewalk on the south side of Wilson Avenue when the weather's nice. He likely interacts with many other neighbors and helps serve as "eyes on the street" to help keep the neighborhood safe. My nickname for him is "The Mayor of Sheridan Park." That's the Uptown enclave basically located between St. Boniface and Graceland cemeteries, Clark Street, and the Red and Purple lines, where I've lived for a decade.Image: Google MapsA few times recently I've noticed the senior having challenges navigating around a sidewalk cut on the 1300 west block of Wilson that's been been there for weeks. I should have spoken up sooner when I saw him rolling over the patch of dirt, or wheeling into the grassy parkway to avoid it. But yesterday I noticed the man had gotten into the habit of detouring into the street, I then realized action was needed to prevent a driver from injuring him

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Vikings traded for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Dobbs. The compensation was minimal, as the Vikings sent a sixth-round pick and got a seventh-round pick back with Dobbs. It was inevitable that the Vikings were going to acquire a quarterback, but what level of player and price they would be willing to pay was up in the air.In acquiring Dobbs, they get a veteran with starting experience and someone who can help Jaren Hall as he likely starts his first game on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.Twitter was ablaze about the news and the reactions were mixed, but most were happy for Dobbs.I actually love this ! Read moreDetailsElon Musk has told Twitter staff that the social media company’s value has fallen to $19bn (£15.6bn), marking a significant reduction from the $44bn he paid for the business last year. The new figure emerged in an internal memo that laid out plans to award employees equity in the business at $45 per share, as first reported by Fortune. This figure is significantly lower than the $54.20 a share deal that Mr Musk agreed to in October 2022 and comes after a turbulent 12 months for Twitter, which has since rebranded as X.Since taking over the platform, Mr Musk has been on a crusade to drive increased revenues after a steep decline in advertising sales. The take-private deal was aimed at boosting free speech on the site, as Mr Musk overturned bans on thousands of accounts previously blocked for breaking the social network’s rules. However, fears of a rise in hate speech led to advertisers abandoning Twitter in their droves.Mr Musk said in July that Twitter would post roughly $3bn in revenues for the year, down from around $4.4bn in 2022.Since his acquisition, Mr Musk has slashed thousands of jobs in a bid to reduce costs, while also introducing new fees. His attempted overhaul has

Is he a visionary? A hypocrite? The last defender of the first amendment? Or simply a bullied kid who got his own back by buying the global playground and trashing it? Opinions of Musk are as volatile and wide-ranging as the man himself.“When things are calm he seeks out storms,” says his biographer, Walter Isaacson. As this exhaustive documentary shows, when Musk acquired ownership and control of Twitter (subsequently rebranded X) in 2022, he certainly found one. The film works on several fascinating levels. It is a character study, a potted history of the last decade of American politics and also a detailed and disturbing exploration of how social media became a dysfunctional forum for the world’s grievances. The pandemic and the Trump presidency were the strongest accelerants in this process. For years, Twitter had attempted to negotiate a balance between allowing free expression and refusing to tolerate hate speech and overt disinformation. But what is a company to do when the president starts spreading verifiable falsehoods

Just look at him asking the Diablo X account, run by a multimillion-dollar gaming titan, to post patch notes directly within the Diablo "X Community group"- a niche group of X users literally one one-hundredth the size of the Diablo subreddit, for reference. As time wears on, user engagement continues to fall (an annual fee, seriously?) and Elon becomes more desperate, expect to see more outright begging like this and more feuds with seemingly random entities. One has to wonder what his beef with Wikipedia of all things is. WSJ charts show Twitter's steep decline in users and revenue Twitter owner Elon Musk and his stalwart CEO, Linda Yaccarino, have been sharing rosy news about the platform recently. Musk

The Tigers have lost four games in the season for the first time since 2011. The 2-4 record in the ACC is the worst start in league play since 1998. Check out some of the social media reactions to Clemson's fourth loss of the season: Clemson’s Dabo Swinney on Oct. 17: “Honestly, maybe we need to lose a few games & lighten up the bandwagon. Sometimes the bandwagon can get a little too full.” Mission accomplished: Tigers are 0-2 since then & drop to 7-7 in last 14 games— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) October 28, 2023 What more is there to say about Clemson? Even as X looks and feels something like Twitter, the more time you spend on it the clearer it becomes that it's merely an approximation. Musk has dismantled core features of what made Twitter, Twitter — its name and blue bird logo, its verification system, its Trust and Safety advisory group. Not to mention content moderation and hate speech enforcement. He also fired, laid off or lost the majority of its workforce — engineers who keep the site running, moderators who keep it from being overrun with hate, executives in charge of making rules and enforcing them. As a business, X is also far from its prior incarnation, with the service having lost droves of advertisers and users.
Read moreDetailsWelcome to Elon Musk’s Twitter (now X), where the rules are made up and the check marks don’t matter. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO announced his bid to buy Twitter in April 2022, zealously driven to rid the platform of spam bots and protect free speech; now, it’s the one-year anniversary since he made his dramatic entrance to the company in October 2022, and the platform has changed so much that even its name is different. “This is just my strong, intuitive sense that having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization,” Musk said at a TED conference on the day he made his offer. “I don’t care about the economics at all.” Even for one of the richest men in the world, $44 billion is a lot of money to cough up to buy a middling social platform. Despite his fervent declarations about expanding “the scope and scale of consciousness” through public discourse, the billionaire got cold feet. A month later in May, he tried to kill the deal, claiming that Twitter had more bots than its public filings let on. After a truly chaotic legal discovery process
