Snapchat removes the Controversial Speed Filter over Rash Driving concerns

After hearing controversies since 2013, finally, Snapchat has decided to wave goodbye to its speed filter on both Android and iOS. Many users accused this filter of encouraging and promoting rash driving and highlighted that many people especially youth had to witness accidents due to it. Basically, the speed filter captures how fast Snapchat users are moving and allows them to share the result with their friends. Since teenagers usually get easily attracted to such features, many non-profit organizations along with families of young people who were part of some deadly car crash sued Snapchat and forced the company to remove this filter for social wellbeing. Till now, Snapchat was defending its controversial speed filter in court but now it has lost the battle and has decided to remove it while one of the most evident reasons behind it is that the feature is no more popular to spend money for defending it. The company was also accused of misleading youth as some teenagers believed that the company would reward them with digital prizes for recording a speed above 100 miles per hour. Initially, the company removed this feature from the filter and converted it into a sticker with a…

Will there come a time for all of us to log off social media for good?

Born in one of the last identifying years of the millennial generation, I have had the profound fortune — or misfortune — of growing up alongside the evolution of “Big Social.” The networking platforms that have changed our world — Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram — came of age as I did. And for 15 years, I have shared my life online and looked onto others’, mesmerized by a never-ending parade of digital show-and-tell. Facebook dominated high school and most of college. Excited proclamations about which college or sorority a person chose became routine, as did albums of school dances, weekend happenings and family vacations. Later, Instagram showed up, in a more commanding format, and late adopters like myself thought, “What would I even take photos of? My life isn’t that interesting.” The answer, evident today, is “everything” and “yes, it is.” Before the advent of Big Social, humans were not yet omnipotent beings. Our knowledge of other people’s lives was confined to conversations and observations within the square miles surrounding our homes, school, work and extracurriculars. Now, thanks to algorithms and a collective impulsivity, I know my friend’s cousin recently got engaged at a picnic on the beach in…

Man Sentenced To 30 Years For Operating Kids Sex For Drugs Scheme

David Lewis Pacheco Sonora, CA – A Crystal Falls man who used social media to target kids in a sex for drugs scheme was sentenced to 30 years in prison by a judge who called him a “one-man crime spree.” Initially charged with 54 counts, as reported here, in all, 30-year-old David Pacheco pled guilty to 37 felony charges including three violent felonies for forcible sex crimes. Tuolumne County District Attorney Cassandra Jenecke says that provision and making sure Pacheco paid for his crimes without the kids having to testify were key concerns discussed with the victims and their families. “We came to the conclusion to make a plea deal that would make it difficult for Pacheco to be released from state prison and we wanted to avoid re-traumatization for our survivors. We looked at the charges and the amount of time that he could serve, and 30 years seemed about right.” Additionally, Pacheco will have to serve 85% of his sentence, at least 25 years, register as a lifetime sex offender, and be placed on parole after being released from prison. Pacheco was arrested on February 23rd after sheriff’s deputies raided his home. Inside they seized over 14 pounds…

Trainee paramedic who blackmailed four teenage boys to send explicit photos and videos sentenced

A trainee paramedic who blackmailed four teenage boys, including two brothers, to send explicit pictures and videos of themselves has been handed a two year probation order. Newry Crown Court heard that 22-year-old Mark Wilson set up numerous fake Snapchat accounts to pose as a female in order to dupe the boys and then using the images to blackmail them into sending more on threat of public exposure. Wilson, from Thornleigh in Armagh, confessed his guilt to seven of the 12 charges against him – inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, inciting a child to take an indecent image of themselves, distributing indecent images of children and attempting to possess an indecent image of a child, all committed between December 1, 2016 and June 1, 2017. While the other five charges, four blackmail and one of sexual communication with a child, were being left in the books, prosecuting counsel Fiona O’Kane said the guilty pleas were being accepted “on a full facts basis”. Teenager filmed on Snapchat kicking pensioner into river jailed for 10 weeks

A teenager filmed on Snapchat kicking a helpless pensioner into a freezing river has been jailed for 10 weeks. Benjamin Bridgeman, 19, booted the unsuspecting 74-year-old from behind as he paused during a walk along the River Mersey on April 25. He and a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, could then be seen running away laughing after the attack. The elderly victim was only rescued from the water when two schoolgirls heard him screaming and formed a human chain to pull him out. Bridgeman, of Orford in Warrington, pleaded guilty to assault at the town’s magistrates’ court. District Judge Nicholas Sanders handed him a 10-week prison sentence and ordered him to pay the victim £500 in compensation. He said it was an ‘extremely serious offence’ and described the video as ‘frankly sickening’. The court heard the pensioner had been out for a walk at around 2.30pm on the Sunday afternoon when he was ‘pushed very hard from behind’. Footage of the attack was posted on the social media app with a series of laughing emojis. Prosecutor Angela Blackmore told the court the victim fell into the river ‘and banged his face on something’, adding: ‘He described…

Parents take action after son dies of overdose from drugs bought on Snapchat

A California couple whose son died because of an overdose from drugs he bought off Snapchat is sharing their plea to parents in hopes of saving a life."This was a homicide, and we miss him," Sam Chapman said. On Feb. 7, Dr. Laura Berman and Sam Chapman, lost their 16-year-old son, Sammy, to an overdose."We're taking it one day at a time. It's not easy healing from the loss of a child," Chapman said."It's not something you get over. I think it's literally just a new lifestyle," Berman said. They told WISN 12 News' Diana Gutierrez that curiosity sparked Sammy's encounter with drugs. It started with him ordering a dropoff at his Santa Monica home from a "drug menu" on Snapchat."It was poison. It was fentanyl, and it was not what he thought he was buying," Chapman said. "It didn't occur to either of us, with him home during a pandemic, that he could have access to drugs and no idea that they could be delivered to the house like a pizza," Berman said. Sammy took fentanyl, which is a synthetic opioid, and was found unresponsive in his room the next morning. His parents said their son was smart and funny with…
